Course Description:

Principles of Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security (LPSCS) introduces students to professions in law enforcement, security, corrections, and fire and emergency management services. Students will examine the roles and responsibilities of police, courts, corrections, private security, and protective agencies of fire and emergency services. The course provides students with an overview of the skills necessary for careers in law enforcement, fire service, security, and corrections.

Course Objectives:

  • We will understand the origin of criminal law in society.
  • We will explore the roles of public safety professional, and societies expectations for these professions.
  • We will understand the roles and functions of the correctional system
  • We will examine the role of the judiciary, and explore the judiciary process.
  • We will evaluate the role of private security in society.
  • We will understand the role of fire and EMS services in society.
  • We will examine interagency partnerships in public safety.
  • We will explore health and safety considerations LPSCS careers.
  • We will explore the pathways into entering a LPSCS career.

Grading:

The following grading system is standard at Liberty Hills High School

  • 50% Major Grades (Exams, Research Papers, Comprehensive Projects)
  • 30% Minor Grades (Quizzes, Labs, Notebook, Presentations)
  • 20% Other (Daily Class Assignments, Homework)

Each six week grading period will minimally be based upon:

  • Three Major Grades
  • Four to Six Minor Grades
  • Three Other

Assigned dates are to be determined. Advanced notice will be provided.

Retesting and Redoing Project Work

  • Any student who makes less than a 70 on a major assignment (test or project) has the opportunity to retest or redo the assignment.
  • Retest/Redo must be completed within 5 school daysof the original date.
  • Student must attend a tutorial session with the teacher before a retest is taken.
  • The retest/redo will be graded for full credit and averaged with the original grade. The maximum grade recorded will be limited to a 70.
  • The new test or assignment may be different from the original.
  • Retests can be scheduled before or after school, or advisory.
  • Failure to complete a major grade assignment (i.e. Research Paper) is not subject to a Redo. Due date for assignment will stand and late grade penalties will be applied.
  • Final Exams are not subject to a retest.

Late Work Procedure

This policy applies to all class work.

  • 1 day late — maximum score of 90
  • 2 days late —maximum score of 80
  • 3 days late —maximum score of 70

*Late work will not be accepted beyond three days absent extenuating circumstances.

Instruction Methods:

The course is taught using a variety of instructional approaches including discussions, small group work, and project creation. Google Classroom will be also used this year.
