COURSE NUMBER: Coun 650

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of major counseling theories and practices. The primary focus is on providing students with a theoretical foundation upon which to develop their counseling approach. To obtain an overview of theory, practice, methods, basic principles, and concepts used in educational settings and community agencies by counselors.

PURPOSE OF COURSE: The purpose of this course is to have students gain an understanding of the major theoretical orientations of counseling. By the end of the course students should be able to distinguish various theoretical orientations, know how various theories are applied, and begin to be able to articulate a theoretical orientation of their own.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)Understand the purpose of a theory.

2)Read a biographical sketch and learn about the major theorist of each theory.

3)Articulate the view of human nature of each theory.

4)Understand key concepts of the various theoretical orientations.

5)Learn the major techniques of each theory.

6)Understand the therapeutic process of each theory.

7)Review the social, cultural, and spiritual issues related to each theory.

8)Examine the efficacy of each theory.

9)Examine one’s own view of human nature.

10)Develop one’s own theory based on one’s view of human nature

11)Be able to apply knowledge learned to case studies.

12)Have knowledge of ethical, professional, and legal issues as they apply to the use of counseling theories with clients.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1)Text readings as assigned.

2)View web-based or DVD role-plays

3)Listen to “Stories About Famous Therapists” on the web

4)Take exams and complete paper

COURSE SEQUENCING:This course is one of the conditional status courses in the master’s program in counseling and should be taken after, or concurrently with, Coun 601 and Coun 633. Students who are not admitted in the program and wish to take the course should obtain permission from the instructor.
