Press Release Spring 2017

An opaline beauty

The Old English series is rooted in a collaboration between Holmegaard and flower enthusiast Claus Dalby. The idea was to create a design that is not only beautiful in its own right, but also makes an aesthetically pleasing show of its contents. Since the introduction of the first vase, Old English has become cult among flower fans and garden lovers alike. Now this floral universe is being supplemented with a new design in ultra-elegant opaline glass that pays tribute to the Nordic colour palette and makes a perfect “canvas” for flowers of all kinds and in all colours.

With its white surfaces and characteristic minimalism, Nordic Living has gone from a trend to a lifestyle that appeals to people all over the world. The Scandi-cool look uses white as a foundation on walls, furniture and other large surfaces to create a crisp, stylish atmosphere in the home that amplifies the effect of carefully selected colourful elements. This spring, Holmegaard pays tribute to the Nordic style with a beautiful new addition to the ever-popular Old English series – a vase in opaline white.

Creating pieces in white is nothing new to Holmegaard. The white blown glass has been part of the iconic glassmaker’s signature for centuries, and the new release this spring showcases the supreme craftsmanship required when working in coloured blown glass. The opaline Old English vase comprises three layers of glass, with the white glass nestled in the middle to capture the colour and create a translucent and sophisticated look. The foot of the vase, however, has been kept in clear glass, giving Old English that characteristic floating expression, which elevates the bouquet as though placed on a pedestal.

The flower artist’s blank canvas

Even though Old English takes its idiom form the classical Greek amphora vase and is a piece of Danish glass art, the inspiration behind it is unmistakeably English. As the name suggests, Old English is creatively inspired by the romantic English gardening tradition, which abounds with gorgeous flowerbeds and decorative summer bouquets that call for a vase that can bring out the best in all types of flowers. With its narrow waist and wide embrace, Old English lets flowers unfold freely, resulting in a casual, bohemian look that blends in perfectly in Scandinavian-style interiors. Meanwhile, the neutral white colour makes the perfect canvas for all floralists who want to experiment with the colours of the season without losing touch with the Nordic look.

The new opaline vase comes in two sizes, making it ideal for all floral occasions, from the garden’s first spring blooms to the flower market’s DIY bouquets and the delicate floral flourishes of the hostess gift, which deserves pride of place as the centrepiece on the dining table. Old English is also perfect on this season’s trendy console table, where it interacts with the rest of the home interior as a contemporary work of art that is equally beautiful without flowers in all its majestic elegance.

The Old English vase in opaline white blown glass comes in two sizes (H: 19 cm and 24 cm) and is priced respectively at EUR 54.95 and 84.95 (RRP).

The new products will be available in stores from early March 2017.
