President’s Message

Another summer has flown by and as the landscape around us changes to the colours of fall we can all sit back and enjoy the remaining warm days before the onset of winter. Overall it was a great summer with the exception of our annual crop of mosquitoes and a little wind and rain.

During the past spring and summer the chapters’ event coordinators were pleased to put on many events. These included our annual banquet, golf tournaments, casino trips, bar –b-ques and other activities. We had a great turnout of our active members and friends who come out in force to support all our activities. Through these events we were able to collect a significant amount of items including non-perishable food items, clothing, household items. We were also able to raise a large amount of money for our charity work.

This year at our annual general meeting in Vernon, BC, the Heartland Chapters hard work with the community was recognised by the National Heritage Club and we were awarded the Community Service trophy.

This trophy is awarded to the Chapter which in the estimation of the National Executive, carries out the widest spectrum of community service activities. The trophy is a bronze statue designed by Montreal artist Phyllis Mendell. The trophy is housed at Canada Post Headquarters and a keeper plaque remains with the Chapter for display in our office.

Congratulations for a job well done.

The Cambrian Chapter once again finds itself with out a President, so we welcome back all the members into our Chapter. Thanks Ronni for giving it your best.

Santa’s Helpers Needed

The Christmas season is once again around the corner, and we are getting ready for all the mail that will soon arrive for Santa Claus. Each year children from around the world send their Christmas wishes to Santa. Over the years Canada Post employees, both current and retired, have been bringing joy and happiness to these children, by responding to their letters. We are looking for Heritage Club members who are willing to spend an hour or two replying to these letters either at home, or at Canada Post.

Each volunteer will receive a package containing suitable responses to choose from, which you can add as a postscript to the letters provided.

Heritage Club Casino Getaway

The Annual Christmas Fun getaway to Thief River Falls Casino and Water Park on November 29 to Dec.2, 2015. Fun games and refreshments on the Bus down. Shopping trips to town. BOWLING 2015/2016

The 2015/2016 Bowling Season will start Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015. As in years past we will be bowling every second Wednesday until Dec. 9, 2015.

The dates for 2016 will be established prior to Dec. 9, 2015.

This is strictly for fun – no fixed teams. Come play when you can. Bring a friend or family member.

The 2015/2016 rate for three games, shoe rental is $6.00 (subject to change!)

WINNIPEG & AREA ACTIVITY COUNCIL

Hi to all our members and thanks, once again, for making our spring meeting/luncheon a success. As usual it was well attended, and enjoyed by all who were there. A synopsis of the club’s business was put forward by the executive. The Oakwood golf tournament was also enjoyed by those in attendance. Thanks to Larry for a job well done! Your generosity in donations of foodstuffs is much appreciated by Agape Table, and the Misericordia Opthalmic ward sure appreciates the new specialty chairs donated on behalf of Heartland Chapter.

Thanks to those who have paid their dues, and are taking advantage of the opportunity to attend these functions. They allow us to keep in touch with those whom we worked with for many years. Your $10 also allows you to take advantage of Medoc Travel Insurance for both short and long stay trips.

This newsletter has applications for our fall functions included. I know it’s a while before these occasions come around, so make sure you mark your calendar for the luncheon and golf tourney in September, and have the applications at hand ready to send in.

SOUTHWEST MB. ACTIVITY COUNCIL

Our local membership has been increasing steadily over the last few years to an all-time high (I believe) of 35 paid members. The last regular meeting for the season was held on Tuesday, May 13th with 19 members attending. In recent years, in lieu of a June meeting, we have arranged a social outing such as golfing, lawn bowling, going to an out-of-town venue for a meal, etc. This year, we voted to have a lawn bowling event with a pot luck supper to follow. That took place at Stanley Park lawn bowling greens on June 8th with 12 people in attendance.

At our April meeting, we decided to make a donation to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba and to the Sun Fund for Kids. Looking ahead to fall, the next meeting would be Sept. 8th . Tentative plans are to hold it at Sand Hills Casino south of Carberry with some executive members attending from the Heartland Chapter of the Heritage Club in Winnipeg. More information will be made available at a later date regarding confirmation of the venue, time and possible car pooling at a suitable location. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

MEDOC TRAVEL INSURANCE

Attention to all members; in order to be eligible for Medoc Travel Insurance you must be current with your yearly membership dues. That means the $10 for 2015 must be received in our office and this year’s membership card issued.

The national office of our Heritage Club has advised our chapter office that this concern has to be addressed.

A lot of members continue to take advantage of this superb medical travel plan, but DO NOT KEEP UP WITH THEIR DUES!!!

Remember …….. $10.00 could save you thousands, or even more should you be unfortunate enough to become seriously ill while travelling.

11TH ANNUAL ED SEDLESKI MEMORIAL

GOLF TOURNAMENT

Wednesday June 17, 2015

On Wednesday, June 17, 2015, 58 golfers teed off in our Annual Ed Sedleski Memorial.

The 2015 winning team was well under par, captained by Les Daniels, along with teammates Terry T., Marcello V. and Vince F. They were a force to be reckoned with!

62 diners enjoyed the after golf hospitality and dinner. The Oakwood Club’s staff and caterer were top-notch as in years’ past.

Thanks to all members and guests who attended. My thanks to the Heritage Club Executive who assisted me once again; Harold Onagi, Gord Arseny, Betty Johnstone and Mike Bonnie.

The 12th Annual has been booked at Oakwood for Wednesday June 15, 2016, 12 noon tee-off.

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

Last year the Heritage Club celebrated its’ 25th Anniversary. We had planned to enhance the dinner menu but missed a couple of items that were to be included.

The menu for this year’s Christmas luncheon will be changed and expanded. In place of turkey, we will have ham, meatballs, perogies and quick holopchi with all the trimmings (a modern day Ukrainian Meal!)

The price for this year’s luncheon will remain the same as last year. What a “deal”!

HELP! HELP! HELP!

Once again we are asking our members to help with our Christmas Program for needy children by knitting items such as scarves, gloves, mitts, toques, sweaters, etc. If you are willing to knit for this worthwhile project, please call the office and let us know your name, address and telephone number.

If you require wool we ask you to purchase what you need and send your bill to the office. We will reimburse your costs.

All knitting should be dropped off at our office by November 16, 2015 to have them included in our Christmas Charity Programs (if pickup is required, please call the office at 204-987-5010).
