COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS

Prerequisite: passed Living Environment and Physical Setting/ Chemistry

This is a full year advanced course that surveys basic concepts of human anatomy and physiology, including the structure of cells, tissues, and organs and their normal physiological interactions. Laboratory experiences, including dissection, reinforce important concepts. It may be taken for GCC credit.
LEARNING GOALS OF THE COURSE
  • Students will identify the methods scientists use to explore natural phenomena, including observation, hypothesis development, measurement and data collection, experimentation, and the evaluation of data as documented by performance on a unit test.
  • Students will be able to explain the importance of the organs structure and function in the body systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.
  • Students will be able to indicate how homeostatic imbalances and poor nutrition can lead to disorders or disease that effect the human body.
  • When given a set of clinical values and anecdotal information, from one of the systems covered in class, students will be able to predict possible diseases and/or consequences to the health of the individual in question.
  • Student will be able to display appropriate safety practices in the laboratory while using chemicals, sharps, and biological specimens.
  • Dissection is a required component of the course.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS: READY, RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE
Statement Regarding StudentConduct: Preparing to become a graduate of Pioneer involves more than academic preparation in the classroom. Every day you need to demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviors that are consistent with our Code of Conduct. All adults in our school will be watching to see that you are developing appropriate behavior and will provide you with feedback on your journey toward becoming world-class citizens.
Class Attendance and Active Participation:
  • Each student will arrive on time and be prepared for class with book, notebook, writing utensil, homework, and a positive attitude. On time means by the end of the bell, not running down the hall. 3 lates without a pass = a detention.
  • Each student is responsible for work missed due to illness or legal absence. You will have 3 days following an absence to make work or a 0 will be given. Assignments are to be made up on your time. Work missed due to an illegal absence or skip cannot be made up and scored as a 0.
  • You must inform the teacher prior to missing a class for a music lesson, field trip, or early dismissal. You must take quizzes or test and hand in homework before attending a lesson. You are responsible for all missed work.
  • Each student is expected to follow the rules set forth in the Code of Conduct for All Students at Pioneer High School. Failure to do so will result in various logical consequences.
  • No hats, jackets, or mp3s, cell phones, or other electronic communication devices are to be worn or used in the classroom. Parents: Please refrain from texting your children during the school day. It creates a major distraction to instruction.
  • Students are expected to use proper manners, appropriate language, and respect towards themselves and others.

GRADING
The following breakdown will be utilized to determine your quarter average:
Tests/ Projects50%Students are always aware of their
Quizzes/Labs35%progress and averages. Parents may
Homework 15%use Parent Connect. It is updated
100%every Friday.
The final average is determined by calculating the each quarter average and the final exam grade (ex: Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4 + Final Exam /5 = Final Average)
Unit exams, the midterm exam, and the final exam will be scaled on a normalized curve (5pts max). For example, if the highest grade on a test is a 95%, that becomes a 100% and all other grades will be curved 5 points.
Late Work: Late homework assignments will not be accepted, even if they are in your locker. If you are absent due to an illness, the homework is due the day you return. Projects, labs, and other graded assignments, other than homework may be turned in up to 3 days after the due date, but will be assessed a 10 point per day deduction.
Progress reports will be sent home to all students each quarter. Please monitor your children’s progress. Please contact me early with any concerns.
