Essential Question for Discussion: How do we know about prehistoric humans?
·  To answer this question you will go on an archaeological dig—well not really—but you will participate in an archaeological dig simulation

Tuesday: 8/25 / Reading/Homework Due:
·  Archaeology simulation continued
Wednesday: 8/26 / Reading/Homework Due: Read the handout posted on the blog entitled “Out of Africa”
·  Answer on your own paper—consider these answers your notes!
·  Identify uniquely human activities that show up early in the African record.
·  To what does the “out of Africa” theory refer? Why was it such an achievement for humans?
·  How did the Ice Age aid in human migration around the globe?
·  What evidence of their lives did early peoples in Europe leave behind?
·  Describe the lifestyle of the Australian aboriginals as late as modern times. How was life on the island of New Guinea different?
·  Discuss Australian aboriginal religious ideas.
·  When and how did humans settle the Americas?
·  What is the Clovis point and how did it indicate a pattern of cultural diffusion over much of North America?
·  How was human migration in the Pacific distinctive? Where did these Austronesian people come from? How do we know?
·  What two developments followed the Austronesian migrations?
·  Study map 1.2 and describe the extent of the Austronesian migrations.
·  If you are given a reading quiz over this assignment you will be asked to answer one or more of the above questions. Make sure you answer the questions on another sheet of paper-if you want to use it on the reading quiz. You will NOT be able to have the reading out during the reading quiz but you may use the answers you wrote on the other sheet of paper.
