About the employer

The newly established SoWa RI for comprehensive monitoring of soil and water ecosystems in the context sustainable use of the landscape is designed to increase collaboration with the domestic and international research communities in order to address complex issues of soil and water interactions occurring at various spatiotemporal scales, from micro- to landscape levels and to run research aimed at understanding the key biological and physico-chemical processes and processes responsible for providing ecosystem functioning with emphasis on therole of biotic/abiotic interactions, organic matter decomposition and nutrient fluxes.

About the position

We are seeking highly motivated researcherto operate two eddy covariance tower and chambers for measuring soil respiration as well as other associated equipment in order to get understanding of ecosystemscarbon storage. The work will be mainly focused on existing LTER site on post mining sites and other long term sites operated by SoWa RI.

The successful applicant is expected to be responsible for data collection, data management, data evaluation and interpretation as well as writing reports and scientific publication.Successful applicant is also expected tocontribute to construction and use of an experimental catchment which will be built in 2018.

Successful candidate will have completed his PhD in a relevant field, will have published a minimum of two papers in impacted journals and will demonstrate his/her knowledge of ecosystem processes. Previous experience with eddy covariance systems is welcome.

Further particulars

Start date (as early as March 2017) is negotiable. The position is available until the end of 2019 and may be further extended based on the applicant’s performance and funding opportunities. The salary is highly competitive in local standards. Ceske Budejovice is a medium-sized town ca. 150 km south of Prague with 100,000 inhabitants, arelaxed atmosphere, and a growing community of foreign scientists at the University and the Biology Centre. Three faculties and five research institutes dealing with aquatic and terrestrial biota are located on the same campus, allowing easy access to other researchers and resources. Both the town and the surrounding countryside provide numerous opportunities for research and leisure activities. Living costs are low by international standards. Courses of Czech language are providedfor foreign staff to reach a basic level of proficiency in everyday situations.
