Essay 4

Politics and Celebrities

During the past few weeks and at points throughout the semester, we have discussed the position and image of celebrities in our culture. Specifically, in Joseph Epstein’s essay, “The Culture of Celebrity,” we discussed the distinction he made between fame and celebrity. As noted in the essay, many celebrities are simply known for being known rather than standing on talent and merit, and much of their fame is created through publicity and false images. Frequently, politicians use these same tools to create a particular public image to get them elected.

Assignment: for this essay, you will choose one celebrity and one politician and research their actions, motives, perspectives, and public image, crafting an essay in which you compare and contrast the two public figures. As you create your argument, consider the link between celebrities and politicians. How have politicians come to resemble celebrities in our modern society? What impact has this had on the public image of politicians and our culture? Consider how politicians and celebrities have become similar and how they remain distinct and separate.

When choosing your public figures, you do not need to be focused only on negative images. You can pick figures which have had a positive or negative influence. You can also contrast how a particular politician resembles a particular celebrity and consider how one may be more positive than the other.

DO NOT pick the current presidential candidates, as we have touched on their arguments and images extensively in class. Try to be creative with your choices.

You will create your essay in 4 parts:

-Introduction: You will use the definition technique discussed in class to create your introduction. Make sure to consider both direct definitions and then expanded definitions. How are you redefining the word.

-Thesis: You will use the compare/contrast techniques from the textbook and class to create your thesis. Use the following template: Celebrity X ______; however, Politician Y ______. Kim Kardashian promotes superficial and unrealistic standards of beauty; however, Hillary Clinton resists typical standards and places her professional merits above her appearance.

-Body: You will use the compare/contrast outlining, organizing and drafting techniques discussed in the book and in class. As with previous essays, you need to use specific and detailed examples and clear transitions. This is a research paper, and you should be using primary and secondary sources to support your argument. You should include 4 sources in your paper which provide evidence and details on both public figures.

-Conclusion: For your conclusion you will use the quoting technique used in class to engage your reader and leave them thinking about your topic.

You will compile all of your brainstorming, outlining, and drafting in a portfolio with all your other required Materials.

Make sure to bring in a hard copy of your portfolio and submit a copy of your final draft and reflection to InSite. Check Portfolio Requirements for a list of required materials.

Your paper must be 4-5 pages long and in MLA format (including a works cited page and in text citations)
