(Summative Assignment 15% of your overall mark)

Your complete assignment is dueJANUARY 17th 2014. Baby books WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE UNLESS A PREVIOUS ARRANGEMENT IS MADE WITH MS.STORKEY. This assignment is similar to a Baby Book that many parents keep to record important events in the life of their child, so put some creativity into your book and have fun with it. There is an academic research component to the assignment so please ensure proper citation information is included.

Please include the following components:

1.Table of Contents: All aspects of your baby book need to be catalogued in a table of contents. You should have page numbers on the pages of your baby book. (5 marks)

2. Birth Announcement: At the beginning of your baby book, create a birth announcement designed to look like the ones you would find in the local newspaper. The following vital information must be included; however, you may include other information or a picture as well: (6 marks)

  • Baby’s full name
  • Baby’s birth weight
  • Date of Birth
  • Name of the parents
  • Baby’s length (inches)
  • Place of Birth

3. Pre-Experience journal: Write a minimum ½ page (typed) journal outlining your feelings, thoughts, concerns and apprehensions about your experience BEFORE you receive the infant simulator. What are you nervous or excited about? Any fears you may have etc.(4 marks)

4. Prenatal Report: Include a photo of yourself as an expecting parent (or partner of an expecting parent) and a written entry1 page (typed) of what it would be like to be pregnant or expecting. Use information from unit two/three of the course to help you complete the following:

Include:

- Symptoms of pregnancy

-Changes you experienced in the first, second and third trimester

-The development of the baby

-Whether you would choose to have a doctor, obstetrician, midwife, etc.

-What you might learn about as you visit a physician or midwife

-Express physical and emotional changes

-How you would prepare for a baby to come

-Things you and a partner may do prior to the baby’s arrival

-What impact might a baby have on the different areas of your life

What kinds of things would you experience? What would you do to get ready for the baby? If you do not have a photo, only include a written entry of what it might be like to be pregnant or what it would be like to be the partner of someone who was pregnant. Express your feelings thoroughly, examining the impact a new baby would have on your life. (10 marks)

5. Investigative Report: Research a childhood illness or birth defect:

Explain the following:

What is it?

What causes it?

Signs or symptoms?

Is it common or rare?

How would it affect the infants life?

What impacts would it have on the family?

(10 marks)

6. BTIO Documents: Upon the return of the infant simulator, Ms. Storkey will complete a checklist based on the care of your baby and a summary of the computer-generated report. You must include:

- A care log: Document the events that occurred while you were caring for the baby ie: the time the baby needed you and what they needed you for. Your care log must include a ½ page reflection on the difficulties of caring for this newborn – what stressed you out or what did you find easy? What type of patterns did you noticed in your infant’s temperament?

-BTIO report summary from Ms. Storkey

-Parenting readiness quiz that we completed prior to taking the dolls home
(10 marks)

7. Daily Journal Entries: For the period of time you have the baby, you are required to document in detail the events of the day, such as feelings experienced while caring for the baby or any problems encountered. Be sure to give specific details about any events you attend such as church, an arena, a family or friend gathering or the mall. Your journals must be in complete sentence form and be a minimum of ¾ of a page typed in length (minimum of 2 journals). (20 marks)

8. Overall Summary: After the 3 days of parenting are over, write a 1 page typed summary discussing your feelings about the project by answering the following questions:

(10 marks)

  • How was the simulation similar to and different from having a real baby?
  • What did you like about caring for baby?
  • What did you find hard about caring for baby?
  • How did you handle the attention of others fatigue, frustration, and other demands in your life?
  • How ready are you for parenting RIGHT NOW?
  • Conclude your summary by clearly stating what you have learned from this project.

9.Memorabilia: you may include anything extra throughout the baby book that you think is important. The amount and quality is up to your discretion. Items such as stickers, photos, coloured paper, horoscopes, baby shower invitation, newspaper/magazine articles of interest, etc. may be included. (5 marks)

10. Overall Baby Book: Overall appearance of the baby book. Was it neat, organized and creative? Were headings used? Was there proper spelling, grammar, sentence structure, and formatting of written work? Was it typed? Did it look like time and care was put into creating this book? (20 marks)

Evaluation Sheet: include your evaluation sheet of the treatment of your baby. This will be given a separate mark based on the care of your infant, but will be included as a major part of your summative mark. Failure to properly care for your baby may result in a mark of zero for the summative assignment!

Completion of your baby book will count for 15% of your final mark. Remember that this baby book takes time to create, so please don’t leave it to the last minute. The more effort you put into this project and actually simulating being a teen parent, the more you will benefit!
