Player/Parent Handbook Contract

Duncan Avery

Club Director

Welcome to Evolution Volleyball Club!

Evolution VBC is a boys’ club for high school and junior high boys’. It is a year round program with the purpose of providing an environment where the boys will improve their volleyball game and learn the important values of team, spirit, and sportsmanship. Emphasis will be placed on teaching skills and preparing the player to succeed on both their club team and high school team and hopefully lead to collegiate level play.

The 15's, 16s, 17s, and 18s teams’ season is divided into two sessions, one beginning in the fall ending the middle of January and the other beginning after the high school season in May. Once a player makes the team in the fall he is guaranteed a spot in the spring season, assuming there are no discipline issues.

The club will participate in all the regional Points tournaments and occasionally the Optional tournaments.

Our club fees are the lowest in all of the Southern California Volleyball Association (SCVA). The clubfees cover: individual USAV membership dues, entry into local regional tournaments, uniforms, coaching salaries, gym rental, equipment, and club operating expenses for the year.

CLUB RULES

  1. Club Fees:The fees for the 18’s, 17’s, 16’s, and 15’s are $3000. The fees for the 14’s and 13’s are $2000. The Club Fee will be paid in two payments: the first payment of 1500 (1000 for 14/13) dollars will be due at the parent meeting and 1500 (1000 for 14/13) dollars will be due January 1st. During our parent meeting, I will be asking for two post-dated checks with the above mentioned amounts. Should a payment be late or omitted, it could affect your son’s ability to participate at practice and tournaments. Fees are non-refundable. If the athlete is asked to leave for disciplinary reasons, no refund will be granted. If the athlete is injured and no longer able to play that season, a pro-rated refund will apply.
  1. Practices/Tournament Play Time:Our practice sessions are designed to create an instructional yet competitive environment. During practice, all players have equal opportunity. In the tournament, playing time is not guaranteed. Players will earn the right to see playing time. Parents are paying club dues for their children to be well trained in practice, not for the right to play in tournaments.
  1. Missed Practices:The coach plans for his practices assuming the full team will be present. Players MUST notify the coach via telephone or text, prior to the practice that he plans to miss. If it is a planned absence, the player should notify his coach at least a week in advance. If it is an illness, please notify your coach as soon as possible. Do not come to practice sick!
  1. Tournament Schedule:We have the tournament schedule posted on our website. The SCVA reserves the right to change tournaments sites up to the morning of the tournament. Please check Evolution VBC’s or SCVA’s website for changes before leaving for your tournaments.
  2. Uniforms: Evolution VBCwill provide players with two numbered jerseys, two shorts,a practice t-shirt, and a sweatshirt. It is the player’sresponsibility to make sure they are wearing the correct uniforms at the tournaments. If a uniform is misplaced or unfit to be worn at tournaments, the player is responsible for paying for its replacement.
  1. Representation of Self and Club:Sportsmanship and team play are important goals of the club. The actions of a player reflect on the entire team. If you are late, you take away from the practice. If you are not present, you take away from the team. If you show poor sportsmanship you represent all of us. Taunting or trash talking under the netand temper tantrums will not be tolerated. In most cases the player will receive a warning. Repeat violations will be addressed by the coach and/or tournament director.
  1. Traveling Tournaments. These are tournaments that require an overnight stay. It may be determined that a team may need to travel to anout-of-area tournament to qualify for JO’s. Separate fees may be charged for these tournaments to cover tournament entry and staff expenses. More information will be provided at that time.
  1. Drinking and drugs will not be tolerated. If this activity occurs during a tournament, it will end membership in the club. It also involves a sanction from the region or at the national level and could mean forfeiture of playing status for a year. If it occurs during a traveling tournament it will mean an early flight home and the involved player’s parents will pay for the added costs. If this action penalizes the entire team because of the number participating in the illegal activities, and thus results in the teams’ inability to participate in the tournament, parents of the responsible should assume those costs as well. There is no probation for this infraction. If a player suspects another of substance abuse, the club administration should be advised. The information will be handled as confidential. Remember if the national organization finds out about it before we act, they will impose a sanction either on the player and perhaps the entire club. This will penalize everyone and put a shadow on what the club is trying to accomplish.
  1. The club will help with college information. We take pride in promoting our players. The club will provide information about recruiting and information regarding contact with a college program. Because the player plays for Evolution VBCdoes not guarantee a spot in a college program nor does it guarantee the club will recommend a player for a program.

PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES

Each player represents the club anytime at practice, tournament or when a Evolution VBCuniform is worn. This is on and off the court. Think of how you want to be represented. There should be no swearing, poor sportsmanship, or taunting of a player, official, or person. Trash talking is not allowed, it takes away from the game and reflects poorly on the player, team, and club. We want the club to stand for SPORTSMANSHIP, FAIR PLAY, GOOD PLAY and HIGH STANDARDS FOR ALL.

  1. Team Support: We are on the same team and club. Treat your teammate as you want to be treated yourself.
  1. Attendance:Players must remember the #1 rule for the club when it comes to practice, tournaments, and meetings: EARLY IS ON TIME, ON TIME IS LATE, AND LATE IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. If your practice is 6-8 (for example) the athlete should be there at 5:45 to warm-up and stretch. 6 means the practice starts. If there is a practice prior to yours, be respectful of their practice. Parents are no excuse for being late. A player should also not “pepper” or play on the side line if he is waiting for his practice to begin.
  1. Absences: Call the coach, or email if you are to be absent. The night before an activity is not in advance! If you are ill, it is understandable that you will not attend, please don’t attend. But a phone call prior to practice is in order. The coach plans drills and each player has a role, your missing will change the practice. Our attendance ratio should be very high.
  1. Concerns:If the player, parent, or family member is unhappy with the player’s role on the team the following procedure MUST take place.
  1. The player only, must schedule a meeting with the coach, outside of practice time. (Before or after)
  2. If the player is not satisfied with the response from their coach, the player can schedule a meeting with the coach and their parents.
  3. If the player is still not satisfied, then the parent may schedule a meeting with the coach and director, but only with the player also present.
  4. Do not approach the coach with concerns regarding playing time at a tournament.

We do care about the success of both the players and the team and will do everything possible to accomplish both. Every effort will be made to satisfy or address the concerns of the athlete. The athlete may not like the reply, but each concern will be addressed and an explanation will be shared with the athlete.

Please remember, if you as a player are unhappy, talking to everyone else but the staff will not change your problem. We can only correct those problems we know about.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES

The parents play an important role to the athlete and club as a support system

  1. Please make sure all contact information is current and up to date on forms!
  1. Please be enthusiastic and supportive at the tournaments! Remember that while you are being enthusiastic about your child, do not take away from another. Cheering should be positive. Try not to be too critical. All the athletes are trying. No one is going out there to do a bad job. Keep in mind that THESE ARE KIDS and THIS IS A GAME.
  1. Concerns: If the player, parent, or family member is unhappy with the player’s role on the team, the following procedure outlined in item #3 under PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES MUST take place.
  1. Parent Involvement. You are welcome to attend practices anytime and watch. You are welcome to help shag balls and toss balls should the coach direct you. Feel free to volunteer, but please leave the coaching to the coaches!
  1. Inform your coach if you are having trouble getting information. We will keep the Evolution VBCwebsite updated with practice and tournament details and updates. The team coaches will instruct their players as to how they will communicate with them (text or email). It is up to the player to communicate this information with their parents. Please be patient as mistakes do occur.
  1. Player is responsibility of the parent. Please keep in mind that at all tournaments, the player is the responsibility of the parent. Please reinforce manners, behavior, and the code of conduct expected as outlined by SCVA. The SCVA 2012-2013 Parent Handbook can be found on SCVA’s website and Evolution VBCwebsite under Forms.
  1. Drugs and/or alcohol will result in immediate expulsion from the club and tournament. Control is mandated by the USA Volleyball organization. Expenses incurred because of this will be covered by the parents of players involved.
  1. The coach needs to know where the player is at all times. Tournament schedules change. Never take your son from a playing venue for lunch or snacks without checking with the coach.
  1. Tournament dates and playing venues change frequently. We will pass on the information as soon as we confirm it. You may see it posted elsewhere but we will post it when we feel it is final. We are trying to minimize the confusion.
  1. Traveling Tournaments.
  • Separate fees may be assessed for traveling tournaments including JO’s.
  • If we travel out of the area for a qualifying tournament, we will provide additional details at that time.

Both players and parents are required to sign below indicating that you have read all of the above and that you understand are in agreement with our policies.
