Physical Education- Summer Session

The State Board of Education has provided flexibility to adapt the high school physical education curriculum. The Indiana Academic Standards for Physical Education will still be required but MarianHigh School will have more flexibility in adapting the PE curriculum.

In accordance with the Marian High School mission statement to ‘challenge students to physical excellence and social maturity’ the following requirements have been put forth to provide some students the option of pursuing Physical Education Summer Session credit (1 credit) in combination with Secondary Physical Education (I or II) during the Fall or Spring of their Freshmen year, as determined by Marian, and therefore, will complete their Physical Education credit by the end of their Freshman year.

This option of pursuing Summer Session PE credit is not meant to take the place of PE simply because the student “doesn’t want to take the class”. This option is meant to enrich the academic studies of the student and to provide more room in their schedule to allow for a more rigorous course load.

The School Counseling Department will continue to schedule incoming students for PE I and II until determined by the instructor and the department head that the student is approved for the Summer Session Physical Education course. If and when the student has fully registered and paid for the Summer Session course, can their schedule be altered.

This Summer Session PE course will be based on a first come first serve basis, and there will not be any preferential treatment based on the student’s grade.

Requirements include but are not limited to the following:

  • To earn an Indiana diploma, students are required to earn two credits in Physical Education. Most students earn these credits through two semesters of Physical Education classes during the calendar school year. A second option would be for students to earn one credit through Secondary Physical Education during the school year, and to earn the second credit through Summer Session PE.
  • The course fee for Summer Session Physical Education will be $300. This course is an additional cost to tuition to help pay for field trips, bussing students, and teacher aide. It must be paid, in full to the Teacher of Record prior to April 1st 2014. After the first week, meaning 7 calendar days, of receiving approval from the Physical Education Department, if the student is unable to continue the course for whatever reason, the student will forfeit the full course fee.
  • Students may not take Summer Session Physical Education course in order to enroll in a study hall.
  • Any disciplinary suspensions from the Summer Session may result in forfeiture of credit as determined by the instructor. This may include any disciplinary issues that are brought to the attention of the Discipline Committee.
  • Student must meet ALL physical education standards as defined by the Indiana Academic Standards for Physical Education.
  • Credits will be issued through the Physical Education Department by a licensed teacher.
  • As in traditional PE, if a student is injured and not able to participate, it is still possible to work with that student in determining an alternative adaptive program that would allow the student to complete the standards within the limitations.
