Pharma firms reject patent amendment ordinance

ISLAMABAD (March 09 2005): Multinational pharmaceutical companies have rejected the Patents Amendments Ordinance 2002, saying the amendments were not in consonance with the Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). Representatives of local and multinational pharmaceutical companies expressed these views with commerce minister Humayun Akhtar Khan here on Tuesday.

Foreign firms willing to invest $2 billion in power sector

ISLAMABAD (March 09 2005): Water and Power Minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi has said a US-based company, AES, has expressed its intention to invest $1 billion to establish 1000mw coal fired power station in Thar. "Pakistan has received tremendous response from foreign investors during two road shows held in Dubai and London," he added. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday the minister said that the US company has sent a letter to the government, which he showed to the media, expressing interest to establish 1000mw project based on Thar Coal, which would bring in an investment of over $1 billion.

Shaukat emphasises unity to raise development tempo

KARACHI (March 09 2005): Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Tuesday underlined the need for 'co-ordinated unity' to accelerate the tempo of development process in the country. He was speaking at a lunch hosted by Sindh Chief Minister at CM House here. Sindh governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, provincial ministers and members of Sindh Assembly were also present. The Prime Minister said collective efforts always yielded good results. Referring to three golden principles of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, faith, unity and discipline, he said every body should follow them for the good of the nation and the country.

Pak to hold six envoy moots to promote trade: Humayun

Islamabad—Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan Tuesday said the government has decided to hold six Envoy conferences in various regions to promote trade and enhance exports of the country.

Speaking at a press conference here Tuesday the Commerce Minister said “This is a new initiative to step up Pakistani trade activities and boost exports in different regions of the world”.

US, UK firms to invest $2bn: Power sector

ISLAMABAD, March 8: Two major power companies of the US and the UK - AES Corporation and Globeleq - have offered to invest $2 billion in Pakistan's power sector in the near future.
Water and Power Minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi told a news conference here that in overall terms Pakistan would attract at least $8 billion investment in the power sector over the next 8-10 years.

LCCI, France chamber sign MoU

LAHORE - The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Meurthe Et Moselle, France, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday, that aimed at enhancing liaison and cooperation between the two sides.

The MoU, which was reached between the LCCI and The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Meurthe Et Moselle, France, would cover a wide spectrum of trade areas. Mr Jean-Michel Laurent represented The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Meurthe Et Moselle, France.

US power giant to invest $1b in 1,000 MW plant

ISLAMABAD: US power giant, AES will invest $1 billion in a coal-fired power plant having capacity of 1,000 megawatt in Thar deserts, said Liaqat Ali Jatoi, the minister for water and power.
The minister was addressing a press conference on Tuesday to brief about the response he received during two road shows held in Dubai and London seeking investment for power generation in Pakistan.

French investment sought in agri sector

ISLAMABAD: Sikander Hayat Bosan, federal minister for food, agriculture and livestock has said that French investors can invest in agriculture sector for setting up tractor and bulldozer manufacturing plants to fulfill requirement of farming sector in
Pakistan. He said France could assist Pakistan in the establishment of hybrid seed technology programme in sunflower and expansions in trade relations particularly with regard to sugar, vegetable and livestock. He expressed these views while talking to Pierre Charasse, ambassador of France who met him here Tuesday.

Pharma industry to be taken into confidence

ISLAMABAD: The Commerce Ministry Tuesday assured the multinational and local pharmaceutical companies that they would be consulted to reach a consensus on certain amendments regarding the industry.
The assurance came in a meeting of representatives of multinational as well as local pharmaceutical companies that was presided over by commerce minister Humayun Akhtar Khan.

ISLAMABAD: A meeting was held with the representatives of multinational as well as local pharmaceutical companies with Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan in the chair.

The issues pertaining to pharmaceutical sector were discussed in detail.

The multinational pharma companies expressed their concerns regarding Patents Amendment Ordinance 2002. They were of the view that the amendments were not in consonance with Intellectual Property Rights Protection in Pakistan.
