OUTREACH AND ADMISSIONS OFFICER

Purpose of job: / To assist the Senior and two Assistant Admissions Tutors, and the Senior Admissions and Outreach Officer, in consolidating and developing the College’s existing outreach and recruitment activities; to build relationships with schools and colleges; and to assist the Admissions Tutors in administering undergraduate admissions.

Qualifications: /
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Driving licence (to be acquired within the first year if not already qualified)

  • Able to work systematically and accurately, especially under pressure, as a member of the Tutorial team
  • Excellent judgement, strong interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to be patient, tactful, diplomatic and professional at all times
  • Able to cope with a varied and demanding workload, to prioritise effectively and to meet strict deadlines
  • Able to work with and support others in a collaborative manner
  • To be the repository of detailed admissions related data and to regularly provide this to members of the Tutorial team
  • Able to make decisions on own initiative and to work with minimal supervision
  • Able to speak confidently to a large audience and lead effective and well-managed class discussions
  • Able to pitch a schools’ session and adapt information for different audiences, often ‘on the spot’
  • Good office skills including computer skills (familiarity with Outlook, Word, Excel, Microsoft Picture Manager and HTML)
  • Excellent written style suitable for high quality/sensitive email correspondence and for College print and online publication.
  • Commitment to the job and willingness to work additional hours when needed, especially during the Admissions round (Oct-end Dec)

Work experience: /
  • Experience of a busy office environment is highly desirable
  • Experience in helping with undergraduate open days/ school university visits or teaching experience (highly desirable)
  • Relevant administrative experience in an educational setting (useful)

Outreach and Recruitment
1 / Develop and maintain outreach projects and enrichment activities aimed at improving progression to Cambridge, and to higher education more generally, through activities such as the following:
  • Access Bus
  • Summer Schools and Residential Events
  • Target Oxbridge Residentials
  • Project Access Mentoring
  • Taster Days and Master Classes

2 / Take a lead role in developing and maintaining the College’s relationships with schools in its link areas in the North East of England (Northumberland, County Durham, Hartlepool, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar and Cleveland, York, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, and elsewhere) / Ongoing
3 / Take a lead role in developing and maintaining the College’s relationships with relevant educational charities, networks and not-for-profits, and also within the University / Ongoing

Admissions
16 / Support the Admissions Tutors and the Senior Admissions and Outreach Officer as required in:
  • Routine processing and filing of undergraduate applications and associated correspondence (particularly intense during the period October-January)
  • Collecting, organising and preparing paperwork for use in selection at King’s College and at the Intercollegiate Pool, including assessment scripts and interview reports
  • Co-ordinating Student Helpers and facilitating the smooth running of the interview process on a day-to-day basis
  • Provide feedback to schools regarding individual applicants and the Admissions process more generally

18 / Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of Admissions-related developments within the University and across the HE sector, including qualification reform, changes to student finance and relevant legislation / Ongoing

  • Responsible for expenses paperwork for student helpers and occasional invoices.
