Organ/Tissue Failure Research Project

This unit project focuses on organ/tissue failure. Many people are affected by organ/tissue failure; you may even have some family members or friends that have experienced some form of organ/tissue failure. I suggest that you choose an illness that has affected someone you know, you have heard about in the news, or interests you because it is unusual. The goal is to research the illness and to orally/visually present information and recent research through a group 3-D book/informational video. Be creative, have fun, and use colorful artwork.

Organ/Tissue Failure / Description / Websites
Blood Diseases / There is a range of diseases of the blood, from hemophilia, to sickle cell, to thrombocytopenia. /

Cardiac Arrhythmias / An arrhythmia refers to any change from the normal sequence of electrical impulses, causing abnormal heart rhythms. This can cause the heart to pump less effectively. /

Cirrhosis of the Liver / Cirrhosis is a condition that causes irreversible scarring of the liver. As scar tissue replaces normal tissue, blood flow through your liver is affected, making it increasingly difficult for your liver to carry out functions that are essential for life and health. /

Digestive Disorders / Functional disorders are those in which the bowel looks normal but doesn't work properly. They are the most common problems affecting the colon and rectum and include constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. /

Eye Diseases / The leading causes of vision impairment and blindness in the United States are primarily age-related eye diseases. From cataract disease to glaucoma and many more. /

Heart Disease / Heart disease is a general term that refers to a variety of acute and chronic medical conditions that affect one or more of the components of the heart. /

Kidney Disease / Kidney disease results from damage to the nephrons, the tiny structures inside your kidneys that filter blood. /

Kidney Failure / The kidneys stop working when illness or injury keeps them from filtering properly. In kidney failure, these bacteria and salts build up and can have bad effects on the heart, brain, lungs, and other organs. This may even cause serious illness or death. /

Liver Disease / Liver disease can manifest itself in many different ways. Manifestations of liver disease that are particularly important include jaundice, cholestasis, liver enlargement, portal hypertension, ascites, liver encephalopathy, and liver failure. /

Lung Diseases / There are many types of lung diseases such as asthma, chronicbronchitis, emphysema, cysticfibrosis, respiratoryfailure, pulmonary edema, pulmonary embolism, and pulmonary hypertension. /

Muscle Disorders / When any problem related to muscle function occurs, the result is weakness. But weakness has many causes, only some of which are related to actual disease of the muscles. /

Neurologic Disorders / Because your brain and central nervous system control so much of you, it is the most complex part of your body. Problems with the brain—called neurological disorders—can affect your movement, speech, memory, senses, swallowing, breathing, learning, and more. /

Pancreatic Diseases / There are many pancreatic diseases. The pancreas is a narrow, flat organ located below the liver, between the stomach and the spine. It helps regulate blood sugar and digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. /

Skin Conditions / There are many skin diseases that range from rashes to life-threatening diseases. /

Spleen Diseases / Diseases of the spleen interfere with filtering blood and the production of white blood cells called, which in turn produce antibodies. /

Thyroid Disease / The thyroid is a gland that controls key functions of your body. Disease of the thyroid gland can affect nearly every organ in your body and harm your health. Goiter, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism are just a few to start with. /

Ulcers / An ulcer is a break in the lining of the stomach or in the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). /

Uterine Diseases / There are many uterine diseases that range from cervicitis to polyps to cancer. /

“ REQUEST” Directed Reading-Thinking Activity

Organ/ Tissue Failure Article

Directions:

  1. Silently read to the first stop.
  2. Think of a question for this section using one of the question words (who, what, when, where, why, how).
  3. When everyone has finished reading, ask your questions this way:
  4. One person begins by calling upon a member of the group and then asking the question.
  5. That person must answer the question as best as s/he can without looking back at the article.
  6. The asker determines whether or not the answer is acceptable.
  7. The person who answers gets to ask the next question.
  8. Continue until everyone has had a chance to ask/answer a question for this section.
  9. Continue reading each section and stopping to ask questions as described above.
  10. Choose a score keeper to record how many points people in your group earned. The person with the most points in each group will earn extra points.

Name / Points Earned

Directions: For each section you read, create a question and write it in one of these shapes.
