of the VIII InternationalD.Shostakovitch String Quartets Competition

GENERAL CONDITIONS

Founders: Federal Agency of Culture and Cinematography, The Family of D.Shostakovitch, The Composer’s Union of Moscow, The Russian Performing Art Public Foundation.

Organizer – «International Centre of Festivals» INO

The Competition is to be held in Moscow in the Great Hall of the Moscow House of composersfrom October, 2 to 9, 2008.

The Competition is open to String quartets if the aggregate age of performers does not exceed 140 years while each member of the quartet should not be over 40 years old by the time of the Competition.

APPLICATIONS

Applications deadline is August, 20, 2008.

Applications must be sent to the address: International Centre of Festivals.

Following documents are to be enclosed to the application:

a) copies of passports;

b) certificates of musical education (copy);

c) creative biography of the quartet and resume of each participant;

d) two photos of the quartet and one photo of each participant size 3 x 4см;

e) invoice of the entrance fee payment.

Applications are be taped or written in capital letters in Russian, English, German, French.

Each applicant will be notified by the Organizing Committee not later then September, 2, 2008 on receipt of completed application form and all required documents regarding the acceptance to the Competition and proposed date of arrival.

A registration fee for each Quartet is €200. The payment must be transferred to the following bank account:

In event of withdrawal from the competition, the documents and application fee will not be returned.

CONDITION OF THE COMPETITION

The Competition will be held in three rounds - two preliminary rounds and one final. All competition rounds are open tothe public.

The order ofappearance of the performers will be decided by drawing of lots and will be kept to the end of the Competition.

First Prize Winners of other competitions are not exempted fromappearing in the first preliminary round.

Not more than 10 quartets will be admitted to the second round.

Not more than 5 quartets will be admitted to the final round.

PRIZES AND AWARDS

The Organizing Committee of the VIII International D.Shostakovitch String Quartets Competition awards 3 prizes and 2 diplomas:

1st prize – $20000 (established by the – Shostakovich’s family);

2nd prize– $12000;

3rd prize – $8000.

Two Diplomas – $1000 each diploma.

The prizes will be presented in rouble equivalent in accordance with existing rules and regulations of the Russian Federation and the rate of MIEM on the day of payment.

The decisions of the Jury at every stage of the competition are final and are not subject to question, review or appeal.

The Jury reserves the rights:

-not to award some prizes

-to divide the Prize between the quartets ( except the First Prize)

-in case if some Prize will not be awarded the Jury has the right to increase the sum of the Prizesin accordance with the free sums.

The First and Second Prize Winners are expected to perform two recitals without compensation to benefit the competition organised by the Organizing Committee during 2004-2005 season.

FINANCIAL CONDITIONS

The Organizing Committee reserves exclusive right to record and broadcast all competition’s Rounds, as well as concluding gala, on radio, television, video and audio tapes. The same rights apply to the sales of the above materials in Russia and abroad. No fees will be paid to participants.

Organizing Committee will provide and pay for the accommodation in Hotel (**) or in Hostel during the period of participation in the competition.

Contestants arrived to the competition and refused to perform will bear all expenses during their stay in Moscow. In case of non-professional performance the Jury has the right to exclude the quartet from further participation before the official announcement of the round results.

Quartets not admitted for the Second and Third Rounds are able to stay in Moscow till the end of the Competition on their own account.

Organizing Committee has no obligations regarding the accompanying persons.

In case of controversy over the present conditions, the Russian text is to be regarded as the only valid one.
