RATIONALE:
“No specific sex education lessons are given. Through their study of the natural environment, the children’s questions about sex are answered simply and honestly as they arise, having due regard to the maturity of the child and the moral consideration and the value of family life.”
AIMS:
- To teach elements of the National Curriculum Science order and cross curricular elements of health and safety or personal and social issues whilst maintaining the school Governor-approved Sex and Relationship Education Policy.
- To allow staff to answer pertinent questions raised by the children as they arise, as well as listening and having meaningful discussions on feelings, relationships and values.
- To be both culturally appropriate and inclusive of all children to help them understand their physical and emotional development.
GUIDELINES:
- Body parts will be given their biological name if it is necessary or appropriate to refer to them.
- Children’s questions will be answered with due consideration of the child’s maturity.
- Lessons on growth planned sensitively and in accordance with requirements of National Curriculum.
- Human growth and the fact that adults can produce babies will be dealt with if the situation arises, for instance if a teacher or parent of a school child is pregnant, in the context of new life at Christmas and Easter or when a class is studying animals.
As part of the Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) curriculum, Sex and Relationship (SRE) sessions will be held. Parent/carers retain the right to withdraw their child from these sessions by writing to the school. On any occasion where this may be requested we will invite the parent/carer into school to discuss concerns so that the child can be involved in the sessions.
