Ode to an Ordinary Object

An ode is a ceremonious poem full of personal emotion and expression. Neruda’s odes are unusual in that they celebrate everyday, ordinary objects, like onions, tomatoes, and salt.

Your Assignment:

Write your own ode about an everyday/ordinary object.

1.  List at least 10 adjectives to describe your object. Use your five senses to create this list. Get a thesaurus if you need to.

2.  Imagine what your object would be like if it were to come alive when all the humans were gone. Think about:

·  What would their personality be like? Regal, shy, goofy, etc….?

·  Who would they be friends/enemies with?

·  Who would they have a crush on?

·  What activities would they like to do?

3.  Write your “Ode to ______”

·  Remember to include your descriptive adjectives

·  Bring your object to life by utilizing the personality traits you came up with

·  Celebrate your object

Your ode must be ONE page in length.

Feel free to decorate and/or include artwork if you have time.
