Pediatric Pulmonary Rotation
Description of Pediatric Pulmonary Rotation
Become competent in evaluating and managing pediatric patients with a variety of acute and chronic pulmonary disorders.
You areresponsible for all hospitalized patients whose attending physician is a pediatric pulmonologist or have been consulted by the pulmonary service.
You are also responsible for outpatient clinics designated to you based on provided schedule.
Patient Care
Goal
Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health. Residents are expected to:
Competencies
  • Develop skills for obtaining history and physical examination, interpretation of diagnostic studies, development of clinical impressions and management plan
Objectives
  • Obtain a focused history, which is thorough, logical and efficient
  • Obtain an accurate, reliable and directed physical exam
  • Utilize and interpret lab studies, imaging studies andPFTs accurately
  • Synthesizethe available evidence in making therapeutic decisions
  • Demonstrate sound clinical judgment
  • Demonstrate patient/family-centered care and a commitment to patient safety
Medical Knowledge
Goal
Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, and social-behavioral sciences, as well as the application of this knowledge to patient care.Residents are expected to:

  • Correlate patient pathophysiology with pulmonary clinical disorders
Objectives
  • Demonstrate a sound foundation of knowledge for common pulmonary disorders including, but not limited to, general examination findings (normal & abnormal), asthma, cystic fibrosis, and sleep-disordered breathing
  • Apply analytic thought to clinical situations

Demonstrate the ability to analyze and evaluate care of patients, to appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and to continuously improvepatient care practices based on constant self-evaluation and life long learning.Residents are expected to:

  • Lead patient care discussions that are clear, concise and effective during supervised Daily Rounds and Care Team conferences
  • Keep accurate and timely daily progress notes

Level of Supervision
Residents are supervised by an Attending Pulmonologist. The attending and resident make every attempt to perform Daily Rounds together, collecting an updated patient history and performing a physical examination together. The resident may complete daily patient progress notes that are reviewed by the attending pulmonologist.
