Course Title: Foundations of Music

Teacher: Dr. Melissa Abramo

I. Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to basic concepts of music through composing, improvising, performing and listening, and is open to any student who has a desire to learn more about music. Personal skills and interests are incorporated into the class, as well as music from various styles, cultures and historical time periods. We utilize music technology, live instruments, and recordings. This course also fulfills the Humanities credit required for graduation.

II. Helpful Suggestions to Students

  • Let your personal interests in music be known to the class and instructor. Your own musical experience and interests can be incorporated in projects and class activities, and can help shape the direction of the class.
  • Keep an open musical mind. We will be exploring music of all kinds together through performing, listening and creating. Don't judge too quickly!

III. Homework Policy

  • Assignments must be handed in on time. Students may re-submit any assignment with revisions to try for a higher grade, as long as the assignment was originally handed in on time.

IV. Testing Policy

Projects and quizzes will be administered throughout the year to assess understanding, knowledge and skill.

V. Grading Policy

50% Projects
  • A variety of group and individual projects will be assigned throughout the year, and grading for each project will be clearly outlined when the project is assigned.

50% Class Participation
  • Each student will receive a weekly participation grade, reflecting how well the student has achieved expectations. Students are expected to:
  • Bring assignments, instruments and other materials to class
  • Maintain an atmosphere of respect and cooperation
  • Be actively engaged in the activities of class
Final Exam
  • The final exam consists of a final project that will use the knowledge and skills learned throughout the year. Students will be given at least 2 weeks of class time to work on the project and the instructor will be available for help throughout. Students will present their projects to the class before the last day of classes.
