NOCN Course Planner: Supporting the Development of Toddlers (all levels)

(We advise against combining this unit with the early development unit due to possible repetition of learning)

NOCN Supporting the Development of Toddlers for Parents and Carers unit (all levels) is completed as part of Peep sessions. Courses involve up to 30 hours guided learning time, with a minimum 16 hours delivery. Pilots have shown that most parents/carers appreciate more face-to-face time with the Peep practitioner (tutor/assessor) to complete their work successfully. There are 14 to 15assessment criteria to cover. This leaves you with some flexibility in planning your course. We suggest that you cover 1 assessment criteria per 1 hour session and also build in the following:

  • an introductory session
  • a review session
  • a celebration event
  • Introduction to ORIM (contained within Personal, Social and Emotional Development)

Remaining sessions can be used to tailor the learning to the needs of your parents/carers. They may want to cover additional topics relating to one of the assessment criteria (using a topic from the small ticks), for instance.

Bespoke Courses

We would strongly recommend that practitioners who are new to delivery stick with the bespoke course. The topics listed here directly meet the assessment criteria within the Keepsake Books.

Flexible Courses

As you grow in confidence you can progress on to using flexible courses, which offer more variety and choice for parents. Flexible courses will require some session planning to make sure you cover the outcomes of the assessment criteria.

The planners are on the following pages and use these codes to indicate the Peep Learning Together Programme learning strand where the listed topics can be found:

  • EM = Early Maths
  • C&L= Communication & Language
  • EL= Early Literacy
  • PS&ED= Personal, Social & Emotional Development
  • HP&D= Health & Physical Development

Most topics listed are for toddlerstages of development but some topics are suitable for all stages of development. They are included as they cover the assessment criteria as well. These are shown with a letter Afollowing the title.
