Course Requirements and Supplies

Course Description:

Art 8 is a half-year course that introduces students to the concepts of space, structure, movement, color and light explored through a wide range of visual art experiences in drawing, painting, crafts, sculpture and watercolors.

Art plays a vital role in the school curriculum. The creative process can be applied to all areas of learning and is central to the development and well being of every child. Art education in the 8th grade can make a unique contribution in students’ lives. This course will guide students to an appreciation of art history, as well as contemporary art, and to the development of the ability to critique works of art with sensitivity and understanding.

Supplies: (PLEASE HAVE SUPPLIES BY SEPTEMBER9th, 2016)

Students are required to bring the following supplies to school. All supplies will be kept secure and will be accessible during class sessions.

Supplies are available at Staples, Blick or Michaels art supply stores.

(1) Folder with loose-leaf paper (To remain in the art room).

(1) Small pencil case or large (gallon) size zip lock bag. (To hold all your supplies in the art room).

Spiral Bound Sketchbook, approximately 8.5” x 11”, around 100 sheets. (Part of Blick Kit)

(1) Box of #2 pencils. (Part of Blick Kit)

(1) Small box of 12 or 24 colored pencils. (Part of Blick Kit)

(2) Black extra thin point sharpie markers. (Part of Blick Kit)

(2) White vinyl erasers. (Part of Blick Kit)

(1) Small pencil sharpener. (Part of Blick Kit)

Optional:

(1) Set of Watercolor Paints. (8 or 16 pan set).

Grading:

Students’ grades will be based on the following:

60% - Classwork and Projects

15% - Test/Quiz

10% - Homework/Paper/Research/Prepared

15% - Class Participation (ex: notebook, sketchbook, critique, do now activities, punctuality)

Deadlines:

All projects will have a reasonable deadline for submission. Students will have ample time to work on projects during class time, as well as outside of the classroom, by request. Students are advised to use their time effectively to meet the deadlines. In the event that a deadline is missed, 2 points per day will be deducted from the final grade. If a work is submitted incomplete or unfinished, a grade of 50 will be assigned. The student will have until the end of the marking period to finish the project at a reduced grade (the deduction will be announced to the student prior to assigning the grade).

Class rules:

  • Always be on time and prepared for class. This includes bringing a pencil, sketchbook, and any homework due.
  • Do not bring any food, beverages or chewing gum into the art room.
  • Upon entering the classroom quietly find your assigned seat and start the Do-Now. Do Now questions will be checked for each project.
  • Be respectful and courteous towards your teacher, your classmates, and their artwork, as well as the art room and the supplies in it.
  • No cross-class conversation. It can be highly distracting to our creative work environment.
  • Return any tools and or materials to where they belong (in good condition). Clean up after yourself.
  • Keep all work in its designated place. Students are held accountable for all of their work. Do not misplace it.
  • Students must remain in their seats unless directed otherwise.
  • Cell phones are not permitted in the classroom for non-art related use. (District Policy will be observed in class)
  • Students may not interfere with the learning process. Arriving late to class and/or being unprepared or disruptive will result in removal from the class. Parental contact will be made and possible administrative action taken. Every opportunity will be given to rectify the situation.

Attendance:

  • Students are required to attend class every day and provide a pass when late. The District’s Attendance Policy is closely observed. Please refer to the policy listed in the student handbook or on-line at In the event that a student exceeds the maximum number of absences of 12,he/she may lose credit for the course.
