Course Description

This course is designed to provide twelfth graders with the materials and skills necessary to adequately and effectively communicate through writing as well as to give them the tools needed to understand and interpret different genres of literature. Authors’ styles, vocabulary, literary components, and persuasive strategies will all be examined. In writing and language, students will demonstrate the mastered skills at a complex and sophisticated level. The following topics provide the focus of content for Language Arts:

Genres of Literature (Fiction, Non-Fiction, Plays, Short Stories, & Poetry)

Writing Research Papers, resumes and letters

Grammar

Reviews for both SAT and ACTtests

Prerequisite

Must have successfully passed English 11

Course Objectives

Students will master the objectives set forth by the Alabama Department of Education Course of Study for Twelfth Grade English and the objectives for the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. These objectives include but are not limited to:

Students will read and analyze different genres of literature.

Students will acquire and hone the skills necessary to write both in structured forms and creatively.

Students will comprehend the rules of grammar.

Students will gain knowledge of vocabulary words, their definitions, and uses.

Students will use MLA format to write a well documented research paper.

Class Rules

All school policies in Code of Student Conduct will be enforced.

Classroom rules will be enforced. They are as follows:

  • Show respect for your teacher, your classmates, your school, and yourself.
  • Follow daily procedures. Head papers correctly.
  • Be responsible for your words and actions. Show RESPECT.

Consequences

1st Offense – Warning

2nd Offense – Student/Teacher conference

3rd Offense – Parent contact and break/after-school detention

4th Offense – Office referral

Projects and Papers

All long-term projects and writing assignments will be graded as a test grade and may take the place of a written test following the completion of a unit. The research paper is a long-term writing assessment and will count as an individual grade.

Attendance and Missing Assignments

All students are expected to come to class prepared and on time each day. If students are not in their assigned seats when the tardy bell rings, they will be counted tardy. The school’s tardy policy will be strictly enforced.

All students are expected to come to school every day that they are able to attend. Students who miss class have three days to turn in all missing work. It is the student’s responsibility to locate his/her missing assignments. Students who miss class and/or homework assignments due to an excused absence or suspension will be allowed three days after returning to class to make up any and all missed work. Work that was missed but not turned in within this three day period will be given a zero.

Academic Dishonesty Policy

All students are expected to complete their own assignments. If students are caught cheating on class work or homework, a grade of a zero will be recorded for that assignment.

On long term assignments/research papers, plagiarism will not be tolerated. Plagiarism includes:

Turning in someone else’s work as your own.

Copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit

Failing to put a quotation in quotation marks.

Giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation.

Changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit.

Copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not.

Any plagiarized assignment will receive a grade of a zero without an opportunity to make-up or redo. If students have any questions concerning plagiarism or believe they may have unintentionally plagiarized the assignment, they are encouraged to see their teacher prior to the date the assignment is due.

Grading Policy

Tests/Projects (Not including Midterm and Final) –60%

Classwork/Homework/Bellringers - 40%(homework will not be more than 10% of this)

90-100=A80-89=B70-79=C60-69=Dbelow 59=F

Students’ final grades are computed in the following manner:

40% - 1st nine weeks average

40% - 2nd nine weeks average

20% - semester exam

1st semester average + 2nd semester average / 2 = final course average

Progress Reports

Progress reports shall be sent home at approximately the 4th week of each 9 weeks grading period.
