Welcome Back Fifth Graders!!!!

Mrs. Milton, Mrs. Paulsell,

& Mrs. Thornhill

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the fifth grade at Lancaster Elementary School!!! We are very excited about this new school year and the great group of students that have been placed in our classrooms. We know that together, we can make this year a successful one.

Please impress upon your child the need to bring pencils, colors, notebooks, binders, and his/her STARBinder each day. Praise and a supportive attitude will help your child build independence and responsibility. Your child will be responsible for completing all assignments sent home. We’d like to ask that you encourage neatness and accuracy in all written work to ensure success in home study.

Attached is all information regarding our joint classroom policies, schedules, and rules. Please take time to read over, sign the back page, detach, and return parent survey to school.

Please do not hesitate to call the school with any questions or concerns. In addition, we check our email daily. This year your child will have Mrs. Milton for Math and Science, and Mrs. Paulsell will be teaching ELA (Reading, Spelling, & Language Arts). Mrs. Thornhill will be working with both of us in some classes. Social studies will be taught by your child’s homeroom teacher. We will be available for conferences at your request throughout the school year. To set up an appointment, please call the school office or drop us an email. Furthermore, your teachers and the PTA will be asking for volunteers throughout the year for various activities. Your presence at school is always welcome!!

We are looking forward to meeting all of our parents at Open House! Thanks for your cooperation. Here’s to an amazing school year!!!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Milton, Mrs. Paulsell, & Mrs. Thornhill

ClassPolicies and Procedures

TEST FOLDERS: The test folder will usually be sent home on Thursdays and contain graded papers and a cover sheet with a dated space for your signature and comments. Please take a few minutes to discuss and review this work with your child. Remove and keep the papers, sign in the appropriate space, and return the folder the following day. All papers that received a D or F should be signed and returned the next day. The rest are yours to keep. If your child fails to return his/her signed test folder after (2) consecutive days, it will be documented on the student’s behavior log. If this is a persistent problem, there will be a parent conference scheduled.

DISCIPLINE LOG: Every student will have a discipline log that will follow them throughout the school day. It can be found in the student’s STARBinder. Please refer to the Fifth Grade Handbook for procedures regarding the discipline log.

STARBINDER: STARBinders are sent home EVERY DAY and must be brought back to school EVERY DAY. This folder contains the weekly Superhero Turtle News, behavior log, lunch menu, and all other important homework sheets, parent letters, notifications, etc. There will be (2) sections of the folder: “keep at home” and “return to school”.

WEEKLY SUPERHERO TURTLE NEWS: Every Monday, your student will receive our weekly newsletter. This newsletter will include reminders of school functions and special dates, topics covered that week, vocabulary and spelling lists, and weekly test dates and a daily agenda section. PLEASE NOTE: All test dates are subject to change. If this occurs it will be documented on the child’s newsletter.

TESTS: Students will taketheir Spelling test online on Friday using Spelling City. The spelling tests will consist of a personalized word list and several dictation sentences. In addition, every Friday, your child will be given either a math test or quiz. Tests given in all other subject areas will be given at various times throughout the week. We will always give the students two days to a week’s notice, so that they may have time to prepare.

HOMEWORK: Students are expected to turn in all homework assignments in a timely manner. Missing homework assignments will be considered a classroom infraction. Therefore, failure to turn in homework assignments will be documented in our “no homework” classroom binder on a daily basis. If a student continues to disregard homework, it will be reflected in his/her grades.

SNACKS: We will have a morning snack time every day. I encourage you to send a small snack that can be eaten in approximately 15 minutes. Healthy snacks that have minimal cleanup are best. Acceptable snacks include: crackers, pretzels, dry cereal, string cheese, raisins, fruit, veggies, and yogurt. Please note that candy, soda, cakes, cookies, and chips are not permitted.

GRADING SCALE: For all assignments collected and graded, we will be following the STPSB grading scale.
