2016-2017 School Year

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian:

It is a pleasure to have your son/daughter in my STEM Exploration/Engineering class this year. This is my 28th year teaching in the Kyrene School District. I have taught Industrial Technology on the Exploratory/Elective Team for 16 years before moving to 7th grade Science eleven years ago and now I return to the Exploratory/Elective Team teaching the new STEM Exploration/Engineering classes. Over the years I have also co-taught 6th grade math applications, substituted in Geometry, and worked with the In-School-Intervention(ISI) program. Along with that I also coach and this year will be coaching the boy’s basketball and boy’s baseball teams.

The goal of the STEM Exploration/Engineering program is to inspire student interest and passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) career paths and to foster creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration in a project-based format. Students will engage in engineering investigations to identify the effectiveness, efficiency, and durability of designs under different conditions. This is a hands-on and technology-rich course.

STEM Exploration/Engineering is a brand new curricular offering and is an evolving and expanding program. Your support and contributions can go a long way in helping to build and strengthen this new program. We look forward to your assistance and support in whatever way – from consumable supply donations, volunteering in the classroom as an assistant or guest speaker, to building business partnerships and sponsorships with your company. I thank you in advance for your support, assistance and help in building a premiere program for your child.

I hope that this very brief introduction answers some of your questions. If you have further questions or interest I would be delighted to meet with you and discuss things in greater detail. I invite you to visit AMS and become actively involved in your child’s education. It is vital that we act as partners in your child’s education.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet some of you already and am looking forward to meeting many more of you in the future. Please feel free to contact me about any concerns, problems, or questions that you may have. I can be contacted by phone or e-mail (listed above) but my preferred communication tool is a quick e-mail message. My voice mail is checked once a day while my e-mail is on all day and checked regularly so I more apt to respond quicker to an e-mail message.

Sincerely,

Stephen S. Reed
