Program Theme:

Houston, We Are Sinking……..

The Houston – Galveston Subsidence Issue

Dinner: 6:00 PM

Meeting:7:00 PM

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to present ourSubsidence Update to your group. I will try to keep it short to allow as much time forquestions as you like. My colleagues, Tom Mitchell and Jace Houston, may help answer some of the more difficult questions. The best approach seems in giving you a briefhistory of subsidence in the Houstonand Galvestonareas while providing some history of thedistricts that were created to deal with subsidence prevention. While regulationsare what we do, there are some other efforts that include the measurementof the change in elevation that provides very useful information to theoverall community. Likewise, our efforts are involved inensuring water is there for our growing region; meeting water consumption demands as well as teachingand pushingthe philosophy of water conservation.

It is our goal to pursue these varyingparts of our mission in a fair and equitable manner.”

– Mr. Ron Neighbors

Notes from the President (in absentia ):

Our primary goal for the Chapter this year was to bring new and timely programs for our meetings. For those of you who have made our meetings in November and January, I hope you found the speakers and topics relevant to our goal for the year. In light of the current debate surrounding recovery from Katrina in southeast Louisiana, in regards to the degree of subsidence that has already occurred and is expected to occur in the near future, a discussion of the same issue for the Houston-Galveston area is very apropos.

Alas, I am again going to miss the meeting, as I have a prior commitment in College Station. While I regret missing the meeting, the availability of Mr. Neighbors and the topic are of greater importance. My hat’s off to Anthony Yanez, Patrick Blood, and Brian Planz for stepping up and taking care of the business of running the Chapter while I’ve been unavailable.

Your President

Bill Read

HELP WANTED:

WE ARE STILL ON THE LOOK-OUT FOR A HOUSTON CHAPTER PHOTOGRAPHER.

Got Pictures?

We want to capture all of our meetings, volunteer efforts, school science events, etc. for nostalgia’s sake and for possible entry in B.A.M.S (which, by the way, has given national attention to a couple of last year’s meetings in their Local Chapters section sans photos). We may even include your pics within this monthly newsletter. Please seek out an officer if you are interested in being a photographer in closing out this already eclectically-themed year!
