How to Register
The courses in this document are listed in date order. The email link for the person responsible for bookings is given on each page. Some courses are quickly oversubscribed;others which are significantly undersubscribed may be cancelled – booking is essential. Please book early: at least14 days before the training event, and let us know if you subsequently withdraw from a course for which you have booked.
Courses will start promptly at the time given. Tea and coffee will be available for those who arrive early.
These courses are primarily for clergy, Readers and SPAs, but are open to other interested Christians where indicated.
Charges may apply to participants who are not part of the Diocese of Southwark. Contact for details.
Messy Church – an introduction

Messy Church is a way of being church for families, especially those who have never been to church before. It involves creativity, celebration and eating together. This course will give participants a chance to experience Messy Church activities, discuss how to plan a Messy Church that suits their local situation, and look at the practicalities, underlying principles and theology of Messy Church.
This course will be led by Lucy Moore, a member of the BRF Messy Church Team, Associate Missioner Fresh Expressions, Messy Church trainer and author of several Messy Church books

Managing mental well-being

Participants will explore ways in which to take care of others and themselves, as all of us manage our mental health. The day will include time spent to think about what pastoral and spiritual support might be helpful.
The course will be led by Canon Andrew Wilson, who has vast experience, both as a parish priest and as a chaplain in a mental health setting for21 years.
It is open to anyone interested.

Zimbabwe Links

In what ways was the Early Church countercultural?

This course will explore whether the issues that distinguish us as Christians in today’s society were identical in the Early Church, particularly with regard to the status of women, marriage, economics, family and sexual morality.

Engaging with our culture: using books and films in sermons and assemblies

The church has often fought shy of the imagination, even though scripture makes a lot more sense when we recognise its value and power. In this seminar, participants will learn how films and literature can feature in our preaching and teaching to capture our listeners’ interest, provide an opportunity to engage with our culture, and reflect on a Christian response to the issues raised.
This course will be led by Rev Simon Coupland, vicar of St Paul Kingston Hill.

Who is Absolom Jones? The man and his achievements

Absolom Jones was born into slavery and went on to become the first African-American ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church of the United States. This course explores his life both as a minister and as an abolitionist.
The course will be led by Lola Brown, MEAC Executive Officer. Lola is a Pentecostal minister and has qualifications in Pastoral Theology, Equality & Diversity and Training & Development

Choosing life : an introduction to Ignatian Spirituality

This two-session course will explore key themes within Ignatian Spiritual Exercises and their relevance for the Christian spiritual journey. It will also look at ways of prayer that flow from these Exercises.

Heresy matters!

Making meaning before you die
The important role of pastoral carers and the local church in supporting people in later life

This course offers opportunities to explore a range of approaches and strategies for providing support for people in later life. It will look at later life as a time of growth and significance, make meaning for those with Alzheimer’s, and the liturgical/
sacramental role of clergy with the dying.
It will be led by Rev Dr Andrew Goodhead, Chaplain at St Christopher’s Hospice.
It is open to clergy, Readers, SPAs and all those involved in providing pastoral support for people in later life.
