Section 2 – Role Purpose

  1. To serve as University Chaplain within the Medway Campus, working with students and staff of all faiths and none.
  1. To be involved in the life of the campus, including contributing where relevant, to the work of various university committees and attendance at ceremonial occasions where appropriate.
  1. To be responsible for the management and effective operation of the Multi Faith Facility within the Pilkington Building.
  1. To help develop and sustain an effective working relationship with local faith leaders.
  1. To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of religious resources in the Medway area, so as to act as an effective signpost to Medway campus staff and students of any (recognised) faith.
  1. To workwith the Chaplaincy Team to provide a high standard of collegial co-ordination, worship, preaching and pastoral care.
  1. To be ready and willing to reimagine ministry and mission with the recognition that some initiatives may not always bear fruit.
  1. To interact actively with the academic life of the University especially where this touches on religion and belief.
  1. To inform themselves about the work of the universities and to show due respect for the values and policies of the universities as a multi-cultural institution committed to education.
  1. To be a member of the Staff Team at St Mark’s Gillingham and to provide light duties to the parish including some Sunday services.
  1. To contribute, where appropriate, to the life of the wider church (at a deanery and diocesan level) having particular regard to the emerging diocesan strategy.
  1. To contribute to diocesan thinking and praxis re the development of Young Vocations.
  1. To have regard to the calling and responsibilities of the clergy of the Church of England as described in the Ordinal, the Canons, national and local safeguarding policies, the Diocesan Guidelines for Clergy and all other relevant legislation, in accordance with the Archbishops’ Statement Guidelines for the Professional Conduct of the Clergy.

Section 4 – Role Purpose: Specific

  • To provide direct pastoral care and confidential listening to students and staff of the University (including out of hours availability) to meet pastoral, religious and spiritual needs.
  • To seek ways of promoting a sense of community within the universities and across the Medway Campus
  • To encourage and support the work of the Student Christian societies, and to develop links with all faith groups.
  • To develop good relationships with the local community, especially through faith communities and churches.
  • To commend Christ and to create regular opportunities for interfaith dialogue.
  • To be chaplain to the whole institution, engaging with issues of ethics, morality and values, and peace and justice.
  • To help students and staff engage with questions of purpose and meaning, yet without prescribing in advance how such questions should be answered.
  • To work closely alongside Student Services.
  • To seek ways to engage with the curriculum, offering input to teaching or research when invited.
  • To work with Chaplains both on Medway and other campuses of the universities to ensure a co-ordinated approach to Chaplaincy provision.
  • To sit on University and Diocesan Committees when requested.
  • To respond to major incidents and crisis intervention, including situations involving the death of staff and students and the provision of bereavement support, and as part of the University Campus Emergency Plan.
  • To delegate and share appropriately within the ecumenical team of chaplains.
  • To contribute to the implementation of the emerging diocesan strategy particularly regarding chaplaincy, engagement with the 18-25 age group and the development of Young Vocations.

Safeguarding

This post requires a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, which will be carried out after the interview. The appointment is conditional upon satisfactory clearance. The

Chaplain will be required to act within both the Diocese’s safeguarding policies and those of the University

Remuneration Package

  • The post will be subject to a six-month probationary period
  • Salary (equivalent of Incumbent stipend) paid monthly, currently £26,060 per annum
  • Non-contributory Church of England Pension scheme
  • Diocesan house provided (including Council Tax and water rates)
  • Reasonable removal expenses (as agreed by the Diocese)
  • Resettlement grant at current diocesan rate
  • An uninterrupted rest period of 24 hours in each period of 7 days and an uninterrupted rest period of not less than 48 hours once a month
  • 36 days annual leave plus bank holidays
