Textbook: Calculus 2nd Editionby Briggs and Cochran (delivered via MyMathLab; see below)

MyMathLab Required:

The course content (assignments, help tools, textbook, etc.) will be delivered in MyMathLab at the website: pearsonmylabandmastering.com. Students must register in MyMathLab (MML) by the 2nd class of semester. Temporary access is available, register immediately. You must purchase MML by the end of the temporary 14-day access period. Students who do not purchase MML by the end of the temporary access may lose credit for all work previously completed in MML AND be administratively dropped with the possibility of no refund. You will be able to enroll in your MML course through Blackboard. Go to Course Content and then click on the Pearson icon. Additional information will be provided the first day of class.

Course Description: 4 hours. Limits and continuity, derivatives and integrals; differentiation and integration of polynomial, rational, trigonometric, and algebraic functions; applications, including slope, velocity, extrema, area, volume and work.
Prerequisite(s): MATH 1650; or both MATH 1600 and MATH 1610.

Teaching Assistant(s): Marc Foster (151, 152), Vanessa Reams (153), Thomas Calkin (154)

Recitation Class: Attendance is mandatory. Twice a week you will meet with a teaching assistant (TA). Quizzes will be given in recitation class frequently (almost every week).

Students are responsible for all information given in class, regardless of his/her attendance. Starting on February 25, students may be administratively dropped from the course for nonattendance with a grade of WF. Four or more absences constitute nonattendance.

Calculators: TI 83, TI 83 Plus, TI 84, TI 84 Plus or equivalent, their use will be supported in class. Examples of calculators not allowed: TI-Nspires, TI 89’s, TI 92’2 or any other utility with alphanumeric/CAS capabilities ARE NOT permitted. A calculator may NOT be shared during an exam.

Grading Scheme: The following schedule is tentative and is subject to capricious changes in case of extracurricular events deemed sufficiently important to the upper administration.

Final Exam / Thursday, May 11,
8:00am-10:00am / 20% / A / 90% and above
Exam 1 / Thursday, February 23 / 20% / B / 80% and below 90%
Exam 2 / Thursday, March 30 / 20% / C / 70% and below 80%
Exam 3 / Thursday, April 27 / 20% / D / 60% and below 70%
Quiz / Given weekly in recitation class / 10% / F / below 60%
Homework / Given by online: MyMathLab / 10%

Cooperation is encouraged in doing the homework assignments. However, cheating will not be tolerated on the exams. If you are caught cheating, you will be subject to any penalty the instructor deems appropriate, up to and including an automatic F for the course. Refer to the following university site for the official policy with regards to academic dishonesty:

Homework: This course will use Pearson’s MyMathlab (MML) platform for a portion of the homework. I will typically post homework assignments on Thursday which will be due next Thursday. Your lowest FOUR homework grades will be dropped before computing the homework average. Therefore, in principle, you could get 100% homework score and also not turn in four assignments during the semester. I have this policy in case you get sick, a family emergency arises, etc., during the semester. Extensions will not be granted; do not send emails requesting extensions on the homework.

Exams: There will be three midterm exams and a comprehensive final exam.

I expect to give exams on the days shown above. However, these are tentative dates. I will announce the exact date of each exam in class. After exams are returned in class, you have 48 hours to appeal your grade. I will not listen to any appeals after this 48- hour period.

Quiz: Quizzes will be given in recitation class frequently. When computing the final grade, I will drop the TWO quiz grades before computing the average. I have this policy in case you get sick, have a family emergency, etc., during the semester. Because of this policy, I will NOT give any makeup quizzes for anyreason.

Make-up Policy:NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN. A test may be taken prior to the scheduled date. I request a week’s notice for this accommodation via email. In the event of a schedule conflict with a university function, dental/physician’s appointment, wedding, formal, etc., you must take the test early. If you do not take a scheduled test, a zero will be recorded for that test and a notice may be sent through the registrar’s office. There are three in-class exams. If your final exam score is higher than one of your in-class exam scores, then that in-class exam score will be replaced with final exam score. If you miss a test, a zero will be recorded for that test score and your final exam score will replace that one zero. If you receive a zero for cheating on a test, the final exam score will NOT replace that zero. The final exam score can count as 20% of the course grade or 40% of the course grade. Again, NO MAKE-UP TESTS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANY REASON EVER.

I reserve the right to test and quiz you on problems which are generalizations of material covered in the class and/or in the text. In short, the problems may not look exactly like the ones in the book.

Everything that I say in class is fair game for exam material. You will be responsible for everything unless I advise you to the contrary.

START WORKING NOW: The best way to ensure you pass this course is to work consistently throughout the semester. In mathematics courses topics always build one upon the other making it very difficult to catch up later if you fall behind. If you need to pass this course because it is your last semester, your financial aid depends on it, your scholarship depends on it, or your parent/guardian has threatened to harm you in some manner then do yourself a favor and start studying right away. I will not entertain any pleas for extra credit or offers to do additional work at the end of the semester.

Disability Accommodations: The University of North Texas makes reasonable academic accommodation for students with disabilities. Students seeking accommodation must first register with the Office of Disability Accommodation (ODA) to verify their eligibility. If a disability is verified, the ODA will provide you with an accommodation letter to be delivered to faculty to begin a private discussion regarding your specific needs in a course. You may request accommodations at any time, however, ODA notices of accommodation should be provided as early as possible in the semester to avoid any delay in implementation. Note that students must obtain a new letter of accommodation for every semester and must meet with each faculty member prior to implementation in each class. For additional information see the Office of Disability Accommodation website at . You may also contact them by phone at 940.565.4323.
