Objectives: Upon completion of the course the student will:

  • Recognize the importance of maintaining physical fitness.
  • Describe how the mind and body function as one in physical activity.
  • Interpret rules and game strategies of various sports.
  • Use sport equipment safely and correctly.
  • Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others.
  • Acquire and develop sport skills that can be used in recreation throughout a lifetime of physical fitness.
  • Recognize physical activity as an opportunity for fun, self- expression, and creativity while exercising.

Grading System: Like any other subject, Physical Education is a class that is computed into your GPA. Grading will consist of written quizzes/tests, skill tests, class work, projects, participation, and appropriate dress. A cumulative point total will be tracked over each quarter. 60% of the Physical education grade is participation and 40% is complete dress per quarter. A letter grade will be given based on the Marian grading scale (Refer to page 5 in the Marian Handbook).

Earning Points: Students must be dressed in their own, complete PE uniform and participate throughout the entire class to receive full credit for the day. Dress and participation for each class will be worth 20 points per day and totaling 100 points per week. If the student fails to bring her shoes, she will not be able to participate in class and will forfeit all points for the day.

  • For each non-dress day, the student will loose a percentage of the total dress grade at the end of the quarter.
  • One non-dress will result in an 86% (B), the second non-dress will result in a 76% (C) and so on. On the fourth non-dress day, the student will receive a 59% or (F) for the quarter.
  • Every non-dress after (4) will result in a detention and lose of points for the day.

Absences: Students that are absent from PE must complete a written make- up assignment for each day that they are absent. This must be completed within one week of the absence or it will result in a zero. Sick or injured students must be accompanied by a parent note, however; this only excuses the student for ONE day of activity only. If the student is going to miss consecutive days of PE, then a doctor’s note is required. Serious injuries or illness will also require a doctor’s release to return to physical activity. Again, any student that does not participate for any reason, including absences or injury, must complete a make- up assignment for each day missed.

Uniforms: The standard Marian High SchoolPE uniform is available in the bookstore and must be worn everyday. Students may wear uniforms from previous years; however, students may NOT share uniforms with students from other classes. Students will be marking their uniforms and uniforms will be checked at random. If students are caught sharing uniforms, there will be disciplinary actions taken. Athletic socks and tennis shoes must also be worn. All jewelry must be removed before participation in class including rings, watches, earrings, necklaces, clips, etc. Participation points will be deducted for students that do not wear their hair up or chose to wear jewelry.

Dressing Time: Students will have 5 minutes from the bell change to be dressed and in their squads. Ten minutes will be given at the end of class to change. All students must remain in the locker room or in the main gym until the passing bell. Arrangements can be made for those students that would like to take a shower.

Lockers: PE students are not the only students that use the PE locker rooms. ICCL, other visiting schools, and other Marian students also use the locker room area. As much as we would like to believe that is does not happen, theft, can and will occur. Students will be able to leave their PE attire in the locker room in a locker with a Marian distributed combination lock. There will be a $5 rental fee for the use of a combination for the entire year. The combination to your lock should not be shared with anyone. When locks are returned at the end of the year they need to match the same number issued at the beginning of the year.

Gym Rules:

Please be,

Responsible for your words, work and actions.

Respectful to all individuals, equipment, and materials in the gym.

On time, prepared and ready to participate.

If a student chooses to break a rule, the following consequences will be administered cumulatively:

2nd offense:15 minute detention with Mrs. Dyer

3rd offense:Phone call home to parents and 30 minute morning detention with Mrs. Dyer

4th offense:30 minute school wide detention with Mr. Morin

Any serious violations can result in direct referral to administration and parent notification at the teacher’s discretion. And remember, fair is not always equal and equal is not always fair!
