DETAILS FOR THE DAY

Plenary Sessions (to all delegates):

  1. Introduction and RYAS Update

This session, led by James Allan CEO, will outline the strategic direction for RYA Scotland over the next 4yrs.

  1. Focus Club Support – The Way Forward

This session shall evaluate the success, and areas for improvement, of the Focus Club Support Programme, which RYA Scotland started in 2014, and detail what the plans are for the coming years.

  1. Using A Vision and Events to Drive Participation & Development

The final session of the day shall give some practical examples of how clubs and centres can utilise a vision and/or an event to drive things forward and develop opportunities for growth.

You need to select to attend one of the 3 options during each session. These need to be ‘chosen’ on the Application Form. Please note that all sessions are open to both Clubs and Training Centre personnel:

Session 1 = 10.15-11.15:

  1. How to Attract New Members Through Your Website? – Social B

This workshop, delivered by Social B – The Digital Marketing Experts – shall cover a number of areas on how you can use your club website as the ‘shop window’ for your club. Key elements of the session shall include: Why is it important to have a good website?What does good look like including examples of sailing club websites. What content is required on a good site? How to improve your website quickly and cheaply? Case studies shall be utilised to highlight best (and not so good) practice so your club/centre can make the best of your website.

  1. Honda Youth RIB – Jane Campbell Morrison & Simon Paterson

Jane and Simon have considerable experience in delivering training and development in powerboating for young people, and look to share their enthusiasm and ideas with workshop participants. Positive and negative aspects of youth and junior powerboating will be considered, along with the equipment needed, and of course, how to train for and win the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championships. The workshop will include input from the young people who have taken part, as well as instructors who have delivered powerboating for young people. Come prepared to inform and be informed!

  1. Preparing for Inspections – Nikki Stewart, RYA Scotland

This workshop will look at what you need to get ready for your 2017 inspection as well as give help, guidance and top tips around the required paperwork. It is also a great opportunity for those clubs who are interested in becoming a recognised training centre to find out more about what is required.

Session 2 = 11.30-12.30:

  1. Working with Schools – facilitated by Jane Campbell Morrison, Senior Inspector (Scotland), Adventure Activities Licensing Service

This workshop shall discuss practical examples of how clubs and centres have engaged with local schools on an informal or formal basis, and help to raise awareness of the good practice as well as the useful ‘do and don’ts’ around working with schools.

  1. Developing Yachting and Keelboat Racing – Jack Fenwick, Keelboat Manager, RYA

This workshop shall look at how yachting and keelboat racing can be developed and supported within clubs in Scotland and what needs to be done to ensure a vibrant and sustainable community!

  1. Motivating & Rewarding your Team

This workshop shall look at practical ways to motivate and reward your team regardless of whether they are employed staff, volunteers or a mixture of both. The session shall look at practical ways of getting the most out of the often undervalued backbone of our sport.

Session 3 = 13.30-14.30:

  1. How can my Club/Centre use Facebook to Reach the Right People? – Social B

Do you have Facebook, how can you use it to engage with new potential and existing members? This workshop shall look at how club/centres can: - Getimproved likes & comments using all of Facebook’s facilities; Use top tips for creating likeable and sharable content including calls to action; Give some key time saving tips as well as giving clubs/centres take away tools utilising Case Studies.

  1. Help to Develop the New Club Framework - Participation & Development Team, RYA Scotland

Clubs are a cornerstone of the new RYA Scotland strategy for 2017-21 and this session shall look at the principles around developing clubs, shall allow delegates the opportunity to discuss how and what key elements need to be in place to support all clubs across Scotland.

  1. Programme Planning – Nikki Stewart, RYA Scotland

This workshop will look at ‘planning your training programme’ for the upcoming season, highlighting areas of strength and potential pitfalls. If you already have started the planning process – for training and/or course delivery – then please bring your programme with you.

Session 4 = 14.45-15.45:

  1. Push the Boat Out (PTBO) and Open Days – A Club Perspective – Robin Nicol & Robin Paris, RYA Scotland

This workshop shall look at the individual’s journey at an Open Day, and give tools/ideas on how to improve the conversion rate from one-off to member. Utilising examples from clubs who held successful PTBO opportunities in 2016 the session shall give delegates some practical hints and tips to make sure that their 2017 Open Days or PTBO sessions are a triumph!

  1. Safeguarding & Child Protection Update – Liza Linton, RYA Scotland

Recent allegations in the press have raised the awareness of safeguarding and protecting children within a sporting environment. Now is the time to double-check your responsibilities – moral and legal – around this area and ensure you have the correct policies & practices in place so that your club or centre is ready for the new season ahead!

  1. Volunteer & Officials Information – NikkiStewart, RYA Scotland & David Kent, SSI

If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a qualified race official or would like to learn about training is available for your club to help support the volunteers who help to run racing, please come along to this workshop to hear more!
