Title: Platform for Scholarly Collaboration

Have you ever wondered where to start a fruitful collaboration?

Have you ever wished there was a place you could go to ask your peers about insight orthe new course that you are going to teach?Have you ever wondered where is a good place to find a mentor? Then you should come to our talk on [Month, Day at Time]… and learn about Taba, an exclusive network for inter-disciplinary research and teaching collaboration. You'll be able to claim your account at the event and become a pioneer in this new space.Taba, is a social network for academics and scholars to find research collaborators, mentors, and to exchange ideas with peers around different topics (e.g. teaching and research). Taba is going to be the most dynamic think-tank exclusive for the thinkers and doers!

Title: Passive Cooling Systems: Low Cost Sustainable Buildings

Climate change is the defining issue of our time and GHG emissions from buildings must be reduced to reduce anthropogenic effects on climate change. Furthermore, during extreme heat events, inadequate building design and expensive energy make air conditioning prohibitive for low income families with negative health implications, especially for the elderly. Passive cooling systems collect, store and distribute energy, providing thermal comfort and with a fraction of the emissions compared to conventional mechanical systems, achieving thermal comfort with lower capital and operating costs. Because of their simple design, they can also be built at lower costs, using local labour and resources, generating income that stays in the community, contributing to economic and social sustainability. This presentation will discuss my research and teaching in passive cooling systems and includes applied research at the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies and architectural education through hands-on construction and testing of low cost sustainable buildings in California and Mexico.

Title:Fitting In: Diversity and Sense of Belonging Among First-Year Students

Diversity and inclusiveness of educational institutions are beneficial for academic achievement and personal experience of all students. Yet, understudied are the perspectives of structural and informal interactional diversity on students’ sense of belonging among racial/ethnic groups and international students. This research investigates the effects of school and student-level characteristics on sense of belonging and to what extent they differ, if at all, for first-year minority students and first-year international students. How do universities promote academic preparation and cooperative environments that foster a sense of belonging among diverse student groups? Using a mixed model approach with data from the School Survey of Student Engagement, results show significant differences between domestic racial/ethnic minority groups and international students in sense of belonging. Among school characteristics, the racial/ethnic composition of faculty and students is an important factor for sense of belonging. While white students benefit from greater structural diversity in law school, the effects on minorities and international students are different. Findings are discussed by addressing

Title: Careful Listening, Creativity, and Collaboration: Supporting STEAM Education

Through Interdisciplinary Research

This presentation will briefly introduce the field of ethnomusicology, a broad field that focuses on sonic phenomena and musical practices as they relate to various contexts (e.g., social, cultural, economic, public health, etc.). We will discuss examples of interdisciplinary research from ethnomusicology and participate in a discussion about creating dialogues between the arts and sciences in scholarly and creative activities.
