JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision, provides practical nursing care.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  1. Performs a variety of practical nursing procedures such asadministering prescribed medications, monitoring patient's vitalsigns, obtaining specimens for laboratory testing, and assistingwith physical examinations.
  1. Performs medical treatments such as changing dressings, cleansingand/or irrigating wounds and incisions, catheterizations andsuctioning.
  1. Observes patients for physical and emotional reactions tomedications and treatments, reporting any irregularities toappropriate medical and/or nursing personnel.
  1. Records patient's symptoms, reactions, and progress as well astreatments performed, nursing care received and other data.
  1. Provides health education information to patients and theirfamilies.
  1. Assists patients with activities such as ambulation, bathing,feeding, and grooming.
  1. Maintains proper inventories of supplies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Current licensure as a Practical Nurse by the Maryland State Board ofNursing.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

General knowledge of patient care, treatment, planning, andassessment; of the principles of aseptic techniques and infectioncontrol including blood and body fluid precautions; of therequirements for compliance with confidentiality of records andcommunications regarding patients and clients. General knowledge ofand skill in administering medications, performing treatments, andoperating medical equipment. Ability to communicate effectively bothorally and in writing; to interact with the public, health careproviders, and agency representatives; to wear and work in personalprotective equipment.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additionalrelated experience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of thework of the job class may be substituted for the education orexperience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 collegecredits being equivalent to one year of experience.
