Lesson # 5
Styles

Grade: 10-11(6-7 year)
Materials: enough copies of the handouts for each student, CD with music of different styles, stereo, little cards with students names, tags with names of music styles(5 of each style), bag(hat, basket, etc.)
Purpose: This activity can helpful to encourage students to think and talk about the topic that interests them. It also helps to learn more about different styles of music, broadening students’ views and giving them knowledge about the topic.
Goals: learn and practice vocabulary connected with music, teach students to make a survey and present the results of it.
Note: The lesson can be expanded by making the discussion on a controversial topic concerning music styles, For example: popular music is of the lower level than classical.
Directions:
Begin with asking students if they think music is important and why. Ask them to share if music is important in their lives and why; how does it influence their mood, if it does.
Then ask students if they know any of musical styles and write them down on the blackboard. Discuss how these styles differ, what situations is this or that style of music usually used/listened to (see example attached)
Play several pieces of different music styles and ask students to raise their hands if they think they know what style it is and ask them give reasons why they think so.
Divide the students into pairs by taking little pieces of paper with their names on it from the bag. Ask the students to discuss in pairs which styles they think are popular now and why. Let them make a list of 3 most popular styles. Make sure the teacher models the discussion first, and then controls the students’ using English.
Give each student a handout with the basic music styles and explain them that they are going to make a survey among their classmates about the styles of music that they like and dislike.
To do so, the teacher divides the students into groups of 5 people (number may be changed according to the number of people in the class) by taking a tag with a different music style out of bag. The students should put the tags on.
Then the teacher models the activity. Students are going to have 5-7 minutes(exact time should be chosen by the teacher according to the class level). Each student should ask one member of each group about his/her most liked and disliked music style. On the handout given, the student should write the person’s name and put a plus near to his/her favorite music, and name and minus near the one he/she doesn’t like. The teacher explains that after the students will collect the information, they are going to take their seats and think for a minute, as they are going to present the results of their surveys to class. The phrases they use for that are given on the handout, but the teacher should clarify them and make sure all the students know what they mean.
During the survey activity the teacher is controlling the time and the students’ using only English during the activity.
