Seventh Sunday of Easter

Acts 15:1-2, 22-29; Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23;

John 14:23-29 [57C]

“I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid…” “Since we have heard that some of our number who went out without any mandate from us have upset you with their teachings and disturbed your peace of mind, we have with one accord decided to choose representatives and send them to you along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

All people seek words of comfort and consolation. In trying times internal peace can be easily shattered and chaos begins to reign. While preparing His followers for His departure, Jesus told them of the present of the Spirit whose presence would assure a certain peace and tranquility. The words were directed not only to those within His hearing, but as He Himself said ‘I pray not only for these, but for those who will believe.’

Words of reassurance in a period of terror and turmoil. The peace brought by the presence of Jesus and His grace in our lives, allows us to confront what is foreign to the Gospel and the message of Jesus. From the song of praise of the angels at Bethlehem with peace to all of good will, through the Easter visit of Jesus, and the priestly prayer, His wish is that we have His peace in our hearts.

Peace is not the absence of war; it is the quiet calm of God’s presence, His grace His Spirit. The two apostles who dedicated their lives to the name of the Lord become our models for Christian living this week.

The Ascension of the Lord is a Holy Day of Obligation. The vigil Mass for the Ascension is on Wednesday, May 12th at 5:30, and both Masses on Thursday, 12:10 and 5:30 will be in celebration of this feast.

Arise, then, women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or tears! Say firmly…Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have taught them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth, a voice goes up with our own. It says, "Disarm, Disarm!" (From the original Mother’s Day Proclamation by Julia Ward Howe, 1870)

The Academy of St. Joseph community extends good wishes to all mothers of our parish this Mothers Day.

“No influence is so powerful as that

of the mother.”

Sarah Josepha Hale
