Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to the 2ndmeeting of WG 3“Impact Assessment” of the COST Action 636 “Xenobiotics in the Urban Cycle”.

The meeting will take place from June 20th to June 21st2006 in Duisburg (Germany) and will be organized by the Institute of Energy and Environmental Process Engineering, Department of Water Technology, University Duisburg-Essen.The main topic of this meeting is

Impact thresholds in the environment & humans

including the following topics:

  • Methods from molecular level  whole organisms  ecosystem
  • Which methods exist? state-of-the-art!
  • What do the available methods tell us?
  • Do we really use the appropriate methods to evaluate the impacts we are interested in?
  • Do we have the methods for this?
  • Do we have the relevant expertises represented in WG3?
  • Going beyond what we take for granted ... ways of evaluating results (e.g. statistical significance)
  • Link to WFD?

In the meeting Milda Zita Voslienewill present an overview of biotests for impact assessment in Europe and North America, Sureyya Mericwill present an overview of the state of the art for complex mixture assessment and Verena Höckelewill give us some informations about impact assessment relation to WFD.

The coordinator of the COST 636 Action informed us that in total only 8 personscan be reimbursed for their travel to Duisburg. Therefore we kindly ask you to respond to our invitation promptly (untilMay 05th, 2006)by filling the enclosed registration form. Please let us also know if you need COST reimbursement for the participation at Duisburg WG 3COST meeting or you could provide your own funds.

Travel information:

The meeting will be organized by the Institute of Energy and EnvironmentallProcess Engineering, Department of Water Technology ( which is an institute of the University Duisburg-Essen ( The institute is located in Duisburg-Neudorf, 10 minutes walking distance of the main station. Duisburg ( is located not so far from Düsseldorf. The distance between Düsseldorf airport and Duisburg main station is about 10 minutes by train.There are a lot of hotels with different prices (from 37 € in the Etap Hotel up to 121 € and more in the Steigenberger Hotel).
