Helpful Reading Tips and Strategies

*We don’t always know all the words we encounter when we read. However there are some strategies that we can use to help us figure out what we don’t know.

  • Always use the picture and the beginning sound of the word.
  • Reread the whole sentence and think about what word would make sense. Then ask yourself if it begins like the word you are having trouble with.
  • Looking for and using parts of words you already know to decode ( for example: if you know and then you can figure out land or stand)
  • Use punctuation and read with expression
  • Retell the story in your own words and the correct order (beginning, middle, end) without needing to look back at the book.
  • Choose one thing you liked from the story and tell about it.
  • Tell any connections (a connection is when you say “This story made me think about the time I…..) you made while reading the story.
  • Tell about the characters (who was in the story), the setting (the time and place of where the story took place), the plot (what happened in the story), and the problem and resolution (what went wrong in the story and how they solved/fixed it).

Helpful Math Tips and Strategies

*We may not always be able to tell the answer to a math problem without using a picture or manipulative. Here are some helpful tools for using a picture or manipulative.

  • Numbers have patterns. For example when we skip count by 2’s the pattern is every other number.
  • Odd numbers are numbers who end with 1,3,5,7 or 9. Even numbers are numbers who end with 0,2,4,6 or 8.
  • You can use a number line or hundreds chart to help you add or subtract numbers. For example if you want to know what 12-3= then you can start at 12 and count back 3 to find the answer.
  • It is important to learn your math facts by heart without using your fingers so that you are fluid, quick and accurate.
  • Ten frames are an easy tool to use when adding or subtracting. They are easy to look at and see how many you have quickly. They are a great visual aid.
