John Chetwood

Most students are unaware of the opportunities they have and the paths medicine can take them; I want to change this. I want to put you in the best possible position for job applications and your career.

I am currently in 3rd year, have been President of IC Global Brigades and involved in a diverse range of activities including ICSM Hockey, organising charity benefits and teaching scuba diving.

Volunteering with and managing GB has fed my enthusiasm for 3rd world medicine and I would like to see more events on the exciting possibilities abroad – as well as explore other areas such as paediatrics, the future of surgery. Importantly I will constantly look for feedback to ensure that events are catered towards your interests. Early involvement will help you be better prepared for your future as well as be more informed on the different paths you can take with medicine. Finding out what excites you should be much easier.

Doctors are also essential to the welfare of our clubs and societies. I’d create incentives and links for them to come back to ICSM, bringing passionate alumni who will bring funding as well as promote our causes outside the med-school. As this position is a relatively new one I’d like see other ways of recruiting alumni explored.

I will always be available to you to provide advice on careers and to hear what areas you want to be informed on, so vote John to get a headstart in your career.

I’d absolutely love to be your next Careers and Alumni officer! Having been a dedicated and active member of the boat club and medical school for four years I have witnessed firsthand the stresses of job applications in final year. The UKFPO system is STILL inherently biased against London medical schools. I will endeavour to work with the faculty as well as other London medical schools to get our concerns heard – this is something we cannot and will not allow to continue! By working with the North West Thames foundation school, I will strive to provide next years’ finalists with the best advice and support during their application process.

Today we need to be thinking about life beyond medical school earlier than ever. I would strive to make information about different career paths, in and out of the hospital, more accessible to everyone, targeting both older and younger years through organising talks and publications so that WHEN the time comes, we can all make an informed choice.

Though the ICSM Alumni Association is still in its early days, it has become one of the most important parts of our union. I have witnessed how vital its existence is to the running of our beloved clubs and socs, with great potential for funding, which one day we may come to rely on. I will continue to nurture its growth, actively seek out new members and get them involved with the running of their association, so that they never truly leave ICSM!
