Background and Context

The University of Hull, Faculty of Health Sciences has an established and excellent reputation locally, nationally and internationally for its high quality undergraduate, postgraduate and professional educational provision and has a growing reputation for its research. The interdisciplinary School of Health and Social Work brings together Clinical Psychologists and CBT therapists alongside Mental Health and Learning Disability Nursing and Social Work in a positive and open culture of learning and exchange. The Post Graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) offers training for up to 30 post graduate trainees as well supporting health care practitioners in post registration training. This course has developed to support practitioners in developing key competencies in CBT for Serious Mental Illness (SMI) conditions as well as in the fundamentals of CBT for common disorders. This post is an excellent opportunity for career development for a clinician with CBT training who already has an interest in SMI conditions, particularly, in the area of Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder or Personality Disorders. We are also interested to hear from other experienced CBT therapists who have other areas of interest and are passionate about improving services by developing high quality training within an academic role.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

This is primarily a teaching post, with responsibility for practice aspects of the programme.

Opportunities for research will be supported if desired. The primary responsibilities of the role include working alongside the course director and other members of the team in developing the competence-based training in CBT for SMI. The post holder will help to evaluate trainees’ clinical competence and be required to assume an appropriate share of the administrative work relating to the course.

Main Work Activities

Teaching and Learning

·  Deliver teaching across existing modules on CBT for SMI (Psychosis/ Bipolar Disorder and Personality Disorders and Complex Presentations) with a focus on the post holder’s area of interest.

·  Contribute to the planning, design and development of teaching objectives and materials.

·  Identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement.

·  Contribute to supervisor training workshops, to facilitate the development of supervisory competence amongst qualified CBT therapists who take trainees on placement.

Scholarly Activity

·  Engage in research and other scholarly activities where possible.

·  Develop programme related objectives, projects and proposals.

·  Conduct individual or collaborative projects for programme development purposes.

·  Write or contribute to publications or disseminate programme outputs using other appropriate media.

·  Make presentations at conferences or exhibit work at other appropriate event where possible.

Relationships and Team Working

·  Closely liaise and collaborate with local clinicians with regard to placement planning and evaluation of trainees’ clinical competence.

·  Develop and build internal and external contacts which may include: contributing to trainee recruitment, securing clinical placements, marketing the institution, facilitating outreach work, and developing research projects.

·  Act as a responsible team member and develop productive working relationships with other members of the team.

·  Advise the course director in matters relating to the SMI component of the CBT programme.

·  Collaborate with colleagues to identify and respond to trainees’ needs.

·  Participate in programme and faculty committees.

Trainee Support

·  Involvement in the provision of trainee support systems designed to aid trainee personal and professional development and facilitate trainee welfare. This will include taking on the academic support tutor role for some trainees.

Supervision of Clinical Work

Evaluation of CBT Trainees

·  Assistance with the setting and marking of clinical coursework and providing feedback to trainees.

·  Examination (as internal examiner)

Personal and Professional Development

·  Ongoing clinical work in a local healthcare setting.

·  Comply with BABCP practitioner standards

·  Comply with appraisal, induction and performance reviews.

·  Participate in training and development activity.

Additionally the post holder will be required to:

Work Experience
Ability to undertake duties of the post / Evidence of:
At least two years in a job in which CBT was an important element
