JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title and Grade / Clinical Placement Co-ordinator (Midwifery) (CMM2) grade
Working week / 39 hours
Accountable To / Director of Midwifery & Nursing
Purpose of the Post / The Clinical Placement Co-ordinator (CPC) -Midwifery will guide and support student midwives (pre-registration) and student nurses in assigned clinical areas to ensure that the clinical placement meets the requirements of the education programme with regard to planned experiences and outcomes. The CPC provides clinical support to studentsand acts as the link between student and the academic college.
Reporting Relationship / Reports to: Practice Development Co-ordinator
Liaises with: Clinical Midwife Managers, Allocation Liaison Officer, Post Registration Clinical Co-ordinator, operational Assistant Directors of Midwifery (ADOM’s) and Link Lectures and in some instances CPC’s in designated external sites
Objectives of the post / The Clinical Placement Co-ordinator will:
  1. Be responsible for the coordination of high-quality clinical education opportunities for students in the Midwifery Education Programme and nursing students on specialist neonatal and obstetric placements
  2. Support, encourage and facilitate students to achieve maximum outcome from clinical placements
  3. Ensure that the clinical practice assessment process is carried out in a timely manner through effective liaison with preceptors, clinical managers and link lecturers (if appropriate)
  4. Participate in midwifery practice development initiatives and encourage the application of theoretical knowledge to midwifery practice in the clinical areas
  5. Facilitates the delivery of the Preceptorship programme for staff

Principal Duties and Responsibilities / Professional/ Clinical:
  1. Assist in overseeing the midwifery practice of students during their clinical placements within the hospital and Community placements.
  2. Support the learning needs of student midwives and nurses on specialist placements
  3. Assist students to adapt to the clinical environment by assisting them with orientation programmes
  4. Create a climate in which students feel valued, free to express themselves and to be able to seek assistance and support
  5. Ensure each student is assigned to and assessed by a designated Registered Midwife (Preceptor). The CPC will verify the student’s progress through a collaborative approach with the Registered Midwife (Preceptor) in accordance with agreed competence assessment procedures to meet the requirements and standards of An Bord Altranais (2005)
  6. Assist the college lecturers with teaching of foundation Skills in the college and skills laboratory
  7. Review learning outcomes yearly in collaboration with the midwifery managers and college lecturers
  8. Attend meetings within the hospital and college pertaining to students
Learning Environment
  1. Assist in creating a learning environment which enhances and increases the student’s clinical competence and confidence
  2. Monitor and report to the Clinical manager of the area and ADON Practice Development Coordinator any practices, procedures or behaviour in the clinical area which creates a diminished learning environment or which may adversely affect the student’s performance
  3. Assist the preceptor to assign student midwives to client care appropriately for effective learning
  4. Discuss the strengths and development needs with the student and the preceptor and liaise with the link lecturer as appropriate
  5. Act as a resource person for clinical staff as to the required level of student learning in meeting the Nursing and Midwifery Board standards
Management of Clinical Placement
  1. The CPC will monitor student performance in the clinical setting and ensure students are meeting the required preceptorship throughout the placement
  2. Advise the Clinical Manager and preceptor of the student’s learning needs
  3. Support and assist Student Midwives and Registered Midwives in the accurate completion of the student competence assessment workbook
  4. Liaise with the Allocation Officer on all issues relating to both the supernumerary and Internship allocations during the programme
  5. Ensure the student adheres to Code of Professional Conduct (NMBI 2015)
  6. Involvement in audits of the clinical learning environments and student evaluation of placements
  7. Provide pastoral care to students on issues relating to clinical placements
Assessment of Clinical Competence
  1. The registered midwife Preceptor is the primary teacher and assessor in the clinical area. The CPC is responsible for supporting clinical teaching. The CPC must verify student progress in a timely manner ensuring initial, midpoint and end interviews are done in accordance with agreed assessment procedures
  2. Consult with the link lecturer assigned to the clinical area and discuss the individual learning needs of the student and when necessary assist in the implementation of an action plan to facilitate development needs
  3. Liaise with the college Course Coordinator in the event the Link lecturer is unavailable
  4. Assist in linking theory to practice by facilitating reflective practice sessions
Practice Development
  1. Work as a team member of the Midwifery Practice Development Unit on quality initiatives such as standards setting, clinical audits, research policy development, to ensure that the student midwife has an excellent learning experience
  2. Participate in practice development initiatives including the provision of educational programmes for staff and students
  3. Represent the hospital on regional or national groups as requested by the Practice Development Coordinator or Director of Midwifery
  4. Identify and act as the link person with staff in the clinical areas for practice development opportunities
Health and Safety
  1. Ensure that effective safety procedures are developed and managed to comply with statutory obligations, in conjunction with relevant staff e.g. health and safety, fire safety and emergency procedures
  2. Assist in observing and ensuring implementation and adherence to policies and procedures e.g. medication, infection control, local hospital policies
  3. Ensure completion and reporting of any clinical incident and involved in learning lessons for future prevention
General
  1. The Clinical Placement Co-ordinator will be assigned to specific clinical areas on a rotational basis, which may include location in the community and other institutes. The Clinical Placement Co-ordinator has a remit for all student midwives regardless of where they are located
  1. Work with the Practice Development Coordinators, Clinical Managers and Assistant Directors of Midwifery (ADOM) and Allocation Officer to solve problems as they arise with regard to administration and organisation of student clinical placements as identified
  1. The Clinical placement co-ordinator will keep up-to-date with current evidence based practice, trends and developments in relation to midwifery practice and theory. The CPC will participate in activities, committees, and initiatives that will assist their own professional development

Essential Qualifications / Be registered in the Midwifery Division of the active register of An Bord Altranais agus Cnaimhseachais na hEireann (NMBI)
  1. Have completed a Third Level relevant education programme
  2. Has a minimum of five years recent post registration midwifery experience of which two must be in a student learning environment
  3. Has completed a Preceptorship course
  4. Have the necessary managerial and administrative capacity to perform the functions of the role
