It was 20 years ago today…

MSP's were welcomed back to parliament this week to the young sound of North Lanarkshire.

Young people from Reeltime Music entertained invited guests in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday night with musical performances and impromptu workshops. Clare Adamson MSP sponsored the event to celebrate the charities 20th anniversary. Guests included Fiona Hyslop MSP, Jim Sweeney (CEO Youthlink Scotland), Provost Jean Jones, Depute Lieutenant Brian Miller.

Reeltime Music was set up in 1997 to provide creative opportunities for young people across North Lanarkshire. In that time they estimate that they have worked with around 20,000 young people. Staff use a youth work approach in their delivery of workshops and projects, which take place across the whole of North Lanarkshire and Central Scotland. Examples include planning and holding events, making albums and music videos, as well as activities which help other young people in their communities.

“If it wasn’t for Reeltime I wouldn't be at college studying music or playing in bands. I want people to know it really has changed my life. The tutors taught me things that aren’t always obvious about interacting with others and teaching music.” Liam Brown, Volunteer.

Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs said:

“Reeltime Music and it's partnership with North Lanarkshire Council is seen as an examplar of how the Youth Music Initiative can work, working with communities and with young people.

I think the story of Reeltime is a very good story to celebrate as we walk into the Year of Young People”

Clare Adamson MSP said: “I have watched the young people at Reeltime grow up through the programme, mature, become volunteers and great advocates for the organisation. Reeltime works in partnership with everyone in North Lanarkshire for the benefit of North Lanarkshire. They are on the tip of what's new and what's ahead.”

Jim Sweeney, CEO of Youthlink Scotland said:

"Reeltime Music is an absolutely fantastic example of a piece of community development in youth work which has managed to attract so many funders and supporters…It’s an example of what can be done if you believe in young people.”
