APPLICATION / The unit specifies the outcomes required to perform intermediate rigging work safely.
Rigging work means:
a)the use of mechanical load shifting equipment and associated gear to move, place or secure a load using plant, equipment or members of a structure to ensure the stability of those members,
or
b)the setting up or dismantling of cranes or hoists.
This unit applies to the activities of a person performing intermediate rigging work involving any of the following:
a)rigging work included in the class of basicrigging
b)hoists with jibs and self-climbing hoists
c)cranes, conveyors, dredges and excavators
d)tilt slabs
e)demolition of structures or plant
f)dual lifts.
This unit requires a person performing intermediate rigging work to plan the task, inspect equipment, safely set up intermediate rigging task, safely erect intermediate structures and plant, and safely dismantle intermediate structures and plant.
Rigging work is undertaken in a range of industries where load shifting equipment and associated gear is used to move, place or secure a load using plant, equipment or members of a structure to ensure the stability of those members.
A person performing this work must hold anIntermediate Rigging High Risk Work Licence.
This unit is based on the licensing requirements of the Model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations Part 4.5 High Risk Work and meets Commonwealth, state and territory high risk work licensing requirements.

PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE / A person who demonstrates competency in this unit must satisfy all the requirements of the unit of competency elements, and associated performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions on each occasion and provide evidence of:
  • safely performing five rigging tasks at anintermediate levelincluding:
  • one of the following cranes:
  • adding and removing a tower crane section
  • adding and removing a crane lattice boom section
  • erecting a non-guyed tower
  • one the following lifts:
  • performing a multiple crane lift
  • a multiple winch lift
  • a combination of a crane and winch lift
  • one of the following lifts:
  • lifting and installing a series of tilt-up panels
  • lifting and installing a series of scenery panels
  • one of the following demolitions:
  • demolishing or removing a series of tilt-up panel structures
  • demolishing or removing a series of scenery panel structures
  • demolishing a concrete encased structural steel column and beam.

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS / Assessments must be conducted by an assessor accredited for the IntermediateRigging High Risk Work Licence class in the Commonwealth/state/territory where the licence will be obtained (i.e. an assessor authorised by a Commonwealth/state/territory WHS/OHS regulator).
Assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements which must include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed.
Assessment of performance must be undertaken in the workplace or under realistic workplace conditions which reflect:
  • the use of full-scale, industry-standard equipment
  • performing tasks within timelines expected in a workplace
  • standard and authorised work practices, safety requirements and environmental constraints.
Assessment of this unit of competency must include the use of the National Assessment Instruments(NAI) issued by Safe Work Australia. These instruments include the requirement for assessments to be conducted in the English language.
Simulators must not be used in the assessment of this unit of competency.
Assessment must include access to:
  • rigging equipment and associated equipment in a safe conditionto meet the intermediate rigging specified in the Performance Evidence
  • safety equipment in safe condition
  • personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • communication equipment including fixed-channel two-way radios
  • associated personnel to assist with intermediate rigging task
  • workplace information applicable to intermediaterigging, including:
  • equipment and maintenance checklists
  • record system where service and maintenance history is kept
  • incident reports
  • workplace procedures, including emergency plan
  • equipment manuals and manufacturers’ specifications
  • risk control measures and equipment.
