Invention of the 1800’s (1800-1865)

Objective: Identify a need for an invention, draw a scale drawing or build a working model and explain in writing details and the future purpose for your invention.

Standards Represented:

8.6Students analyze the divergent paths of the American people from 1800 to the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced, with emphasis on the Northeast.

1.Discuss the influence of industrialization and technological developments on the region, including human modification of the landscape and how physical geography shaped human actions (e.g., growth of cities, deforestation, farming, mineral extraction).

2.Outline the physical obstacles to and the economic and political factors involved in building a network of roads, canals, and railroads (e.g., Henry Clay’s American System).

Criteria:

  • Choose an invention created between the years of 1800-1865. This should be an American invention.
  • Research the invention; taking note of the inventor, date created, construction, future use, success it had in America.
  • Part I. Draw an illustration of the invention you choose. Make sure to draw and label all the important parts of the invention, title your poster (with name of invention, inventor, and year invented).
  • Your poster should not have any pencil on it. Outline everything in black ink if you have to. This will make your drawing look sharp!
  • Another option is to build a replica/model of your invention. It does not have to be a working model.
  • Part II. Write a 5-paragraph essay about your invention. Use the following outline. Here is your topic: What is your invention and how id it affect America, economically, socially, politically, geographically?
  1. Introduction-make sure to include a strong thesis statement.
  2. Paragraph 2 – Who invented it? When and where was it invented?
  3. Paragraph 3 – What is your invention, in detail. Describe it fully and explain what it does and how.
  4. Paragraph 4 – Answer the question, how did it affect the U.S.? Be specific by sighting at least 3 examples.
  5. Conclusion- Restate your thesis and sum-up you paper.
  • Your report should be:

Typed, 12 point font

Include a title page with your first and last name, invention, date turned in, period number. This page may have a printed picture of your chosen invention.

Bibliography-you should use at least 3 sources (your text book, 1 website, and one other book)

  • Entire project is worth 500 points – each part is 250 points.
