Four Corners to show how we can create brighter futures for Aboriginal young people

Hi [INSERT RECIPIENT NAME],
I hope you are well.
I am getting in touch to alert you to Monday night’s edition of Four Corners (19 September, 8.30pm AEDT on ABC) which will focus on the issue of the over-representation of Aboriginal young people in the criminal justice system.

Four Corners will be reporting on the Maranguka Justice Reinvestment Project in Bourke (North-West NSW) – an innovative, community-led initiative that aims to demonstrate how justice reinvestment approaches can reduce prison populations, save money, and build stronger communities and brighter futures for Aboriginal young people.

Some facts to consider:

  • The overall prison population, and the rate of over-representation of Aboriginal young people in our prisons are both rising, yet property and violent crime rates are going down. Something isn’t working.
  • In NSW, over half the children in jailare Aboriginal. This costs $800 per child per day. In 2014 NSW taxpayers spent an average of $293,200 on each child in custody.
  • The NSW Government has just announced plans to spend $3.8 billion on new prisons beds over the next four years. This money could be better spent elsewhere.

We cannot afford to keep doing what we’re doing. The social and economic costs are too high. A new approach is urgently needed.

As you may know, since 2013, Just Reinvest NSW (an independent, non-profit, member-based organisation) has been working in partnershipwith the Bourke Community to develop a justice reinvestment framework. The Maranguka Justice Reinvestment Project is thefirst major justice reinvestment project in Australia.

Justice reinvestment is a smarter approach to justice that builds stronger communities by redirecting money that would be spent on prisons into community services and supports. It is about addressing the underlying causes of crime and preventing it from happening in the first place.

Your voice counts. In addition to watching Four Corners on Monday and encouraging others in your network to do so,you can make a difference by helping raising awareness of these issues, and the advantages of justice reinvestment approaches. This can include:

  • promoting Just Reinvest NSW and justice reinvestment online
  • engaging your local community inthe need for justice reinvestment (e.g. using the online justice reinvestment calculator)
  • raising the importance of these issues with your local MP, and/or

Sarah Hopkins, Chair of Just Reinvest NSW (and a Managing Solicitor at the ALS says: “We cannot afford to keep doing what we’re doing. The social and economic costs are too high. A new approach is urgently needed – and that what justice reinvestment provides.”

Justice reinvestment is a smarter approach to justice that builds stronger communities by redirecting money that would be spent on prisons into community services and supports. It is about addressing the underlying causes of crime and preventing it from happening in the first place.

“What is different about what is happening in Bourke is that decisions about what needs to happen aren’t being made in Sydney or in regional offices. They are being made on the ground in Bourke. Community leaders have made decisions about what needs to happen, informed by data and research, and most importantly, broad community input. Young people are also being given a voice in the process.

“We are in the early stages, and there isn’t a magic wand, but there is a shift. We are seeing is optimism, and a real sense of momentum. I encourage people to watch Four Corners on Monday. We need to spread the word about justice reinvestment and demand meaningful change,” Hopkins says.
