Travel Training Fact Sheet

Guide to the service we offer

Employment and Community Skillsconsists of two teams; Wiltshire Employment Support Team (WEST) and Community Connecting (CC). The teams can assist customers to travel within their community.

Travel support can be linked to other opportunities and enable customers to accesssome of the following independently:

  • Paid employment
  • Voluntary work
  • Socialising
  • Attendinga club
  • Getting to school or college
  • Using their community facilities to do things that they enjoy
  • Meeting friends

The teams provide a time limited service;working with the customerso they areable to begin their travel journey. This could be walking, bus travel, community transport or other preferred modes of transport.

Journeys are planned together with the customer and staff member; fading strategies are put in place to support the customer’s independence. The teams can also support customers whenapplying for concessionary schemes e.g. bus passes, discount rail tickets.

To be eligible for our service you need to;

SEND Service referrals;

•Young people 14 to 25 years of age with a My Plan or Statement of Special Education Need (SEN) or previously held a statement.

Young people with ASC not meeting the above criteria;

•16 to 25 years of age (funded from aiming high budget)

•Resident in the county of Wiltshire (local authority boundary area).

Adult Care and CTPLD referrals

•18 to 25 years of age with an SEN or previously had a statement.

•18 to 25 years of age without an SEN; customers to be identified as having a learning disability or autistic spectrum condition.

•26+ years of age customers should be identified as having a previous SEN, learning disability or autistic spectrum condition.

  • Wiltshire College Tutor
  • Wiltshire Supported Internship Job Coach
  • Social Worker
  • Wiltshire Specialist School Teacher
  • Avon and Wiltshire Partnership (AWP), Autism Assessment Team
  • Wiltshire Council; Social care advice and Information 0300 456 0111
  • Integrated Youth Service

What can you expect?

  • When you are referred, a member of staff will spend time getting to know you and find out what type of support you will need to begin your travel training.
  • We will support and plan with you, the routes, bus times/stops, train stations etcneeded in your community;working with you to identify your existing skills and help you to develop any new skills needed.
  • We thensupport you for the appropriate length of time, ensuring we take into account any risks to your health and safety.
  • We will hold regular reviews to ensure everything in place is going to plan.
  • We are committed to providing you with a high level of service and expect in return that you be present at planned meetings and let us know in advance if you are unable to attend.

Making a complaint

If you are unhappy with the service you are receiving you should first discuss the problem with the staff member. If you tell them what is worrying you, they will try to find a solution. If the problem persists, please let us know.
