Job Purpose
To actively contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching, scholarship and administration that fits with the overall School and College strategy by:
Teaching (at least 60% of workload)
  1. Contributing to innovations in teaching and learning through the development of teaching materials, of forms of pedagogy, and of appropriate teaching collaborations
  2. Contributing to the administration of these and other College activities
  3. Being actively involved in ongoing programme delivery and developments and improvements to the School’s internal and external reputation on teaching and administration
  4. Taking responsibility for student assessment and support
  5. Keeping abreast of professional developments
  6. Organising of conferences, design shows or other activities related to raising the profile of the School
  7. Taking responsibility for innovation in the subject area and submission of bids for Learning and Teaching development
Administration & Management (normally 20% of workload)
  1. Carrying out such School and/or College administrative tasks as may be required by the QM Co-Director of the Joint Programme with Nanchang University orHead of SBCS
  2. Taking significant administrative responsibilities at both School and College level
  3. Providing support and review of other Teaching staff
  4. Keeping abreast of professional developments
Scholarship(normally 20% of workload)
  1. Ensure appropriate dissemination of the subject by scholarly publication or other appropriate outputs
  2. To actively engage in scholarly activity e.g. writing books and papers, developing course materials and updating online resources
  3. With the agreement of the Head of SBCS, this may also include some activity relating to research

Knowledge, skills & abilities /
  1. Strong background through achievement in an academic area such as Biological or Biomedical Sciences or other related area.
  2. Appropriate level of skill inuse of IT.
  3. Ability to work independently and to show initiative.
  4. Ability to prioritise and balance competing demands of teaching and administration and deliver to deadlines.
  5. Responsive to feedback.
  6. Presentation of specialist material in a logical, coherent and interesting manner, both to students and to fellow specialists.
  7. Ability to teach up to a postgraduate level within area of expertise, and across a range of subjects at a more introductory level, and demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment in the process of teaching.

Freedom to Act & Decision Making
Teaching - Essential
  • Organise and undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciencesas agreed with the QM Co-Director of the Joint Programme with Nanchang Universityor Head of SBCS; this includes providing lectures, classes, and seminars, in a variety of combinations. The postholder will be expected to travel regularly to Nanchang to teach on the Joint Programmes between QMUL and Nanchang University (NCU) in China. This may also include project supervision and project examining, each trip lasting approx. 2 weeks, with a maximum of approximately 10 trips per year. The trips will consist of teaching, attendance at exam boards and graduation as well as other necessary meetings with staff and students
  • Set and mark examinations and coursework as appropriate, including attending examiners’ meetings
  • Use experience and knowledge (and an understanding of students’ backgrounds and abilities) to efficiently design, deliver and assess teaching and learningand to provide feedback to students to enable their development in the subject
  • Identify areas where current provisions are in need of revision or improvement and feed this into the programme review process

Communication & Networking
Administration & Management
  • Attend meetings as required as well as other relevant College meetings and boards, as agreed with the QM Co-Director of the Joint Programme with Nanchang University or Head of SBCS
With staff at Queen Mary within SBCS and EECS:
  • Liaise with academic colleagues over collaborative teaching, orally and in writing, in order to ensure efficient and successful course delivery as appropriate
  • Liaise with, instruct and support the School teaching associate staff who contribute to teaching programmes through written communication, formal and informal oral discussions and appraisal, both preceding and during term time.
  • Contribute to groups such as Staff Student Liaison Committee, or Teaching and Learning Committee
  • To identify opportunities for the strategic development of new programmes or modules and to contribute to the development of such ideas
With staff at Queen Mary outside SBCS and EECS:
  • Liaise with other administrative Department/Centre/Institutes in the College in order to support effective teaching (e.g. Information Services, Learning Disabilities Support Group or the Registry), and knowledge transfer (e.g. Innovation and Enterprise regarding Intellectual Property protection, exploitation and other Knowledge Transfer)
With students:
  • Support, teach, advise and facilitate the learning of students in formal teaching sessions (e.g. lectures, seminars, fieldwork, tutorials, and one-to-one supervision) to help them achieve their best potential. Oral instruction, discussion, advice and response, written notes, questions, comments and feedback in a variety of media. Both in term time, and to a more limited extent, out of term time. Act as personal tutor to students. Supervise projects
With external contacts:
  • Establish links with academic-related organisations, such as publishers, journals, research councils, charities and other HEIs, in order todevelop relationships with external organisations to maximise opportunities for Knowledge Transfer, for example external teaching collaborations, links with industry

Finance/Resource Management
  • There are no budgetary responsibilities for this post

People Management
  • Supervise teaching assistants and demonstrators as may be required
  • Take pastoral responsibility for students in the School, as assigned and to support students in key aspects of personal development planning and the acquisition of relevant skills
