HIED/History Collaborative Meeting, March 7, 2007

HIED/History collaborative meeting, March 7, 2007

Attending were:

Dr. Mike Brown, Dr. Anthony Dralle, Dr. Allen Guidry, Dr. Mark L’Esperance, Dr. Mike Palmer, Dr. Don Parkerson.

Changes to the existing B.S. Degree were discussed, and the following were agreed upon:

1. Add: HIED 3010, Practicum Course- introduce pedagogical knowledge earlier in program; expand pedagogical knowledge & classroom management ideas in combination with HIED 4323, Social Studies methods (two credit course)

2. Add: HIED 3001, Teaching Civics & Economics in secondary Social Studies Classrooms- addresses students’ self-identified lack of preparation to teach Civics/Economics at the secondary level. (three credit course)

3. Add: HIED 4010, Assessment and Evaluation in Social Studies- expand content-specific assessment instruction for pre-service Social Studies teachers, especially relevant as schools place greater emphasis on student assessment.

4. Add: One credit our to HIED 4325 Internship seminar, enables instructor to incorporate more pedagogy into this current 0-credit seminar; provides student teachers with more opportunities to apply teaching strategies to their internship. (one credit course)

5. Add: One world history course, 3000 level, adds to students’ content knowledge in preparation for teaching a required secondary Soc St course. (three credit course)

6. Add: One U.S. History course, from among the following choices: Hist 3235, Populism and Progressivism; History 3240, FDR and the New Deal; and Hist 3245, U.S. since 1945.

The History department may develop a course focusing on the U.S. in the 20th century, would could then be required instead of the above courses, or could be offered as an additional option along with the above courses.

7. Remove: Foreign language requirement for HIED B.S. Program- While an important part of a classical education, foreign language study benefits new secondary Social Studies teachers less than the content and pedagogy courses that make up the program. Students receive ESL in educ courses.

8. Drop: 3000-level Geography requirement- Geography is incorporated into the History courses students take in the program, in a context more closely related to what the students will eventually teach.

9. Urge advisors to recommend that HIED students NOT take two courses at the 3000 level exploring the same specific topic- e.g. two Military History courses.

Courses for the proposed MAT Program were discussed, including the following:

  1. Require the following HIED courses:
  2. HIED 6510, Issues and Topics in Social Studies Education
  3. HIED 6500, Teaching Civics and Economics in the Secondary Social Studies Classroom
  4. HIED 6600, Methods of teaching Secondary Social Studies
  5. HIED 6511, Action Research in Social Studies Education

My comment: Since we’re really only looking at two history offerings and four HIED offerings, I would consider reducing the HIED offerings to 3 (consider either 6510 or 6511, for example), and requiring one U.S., one World, and one elective history.

  1. Choose one U.S. history course and one World History course from the following offerings:
  2. Choose one of the following U.S. History courses:
  3. Hist 5130, New World slavery and race
  4. Hist 5220, Selected topics in women’s history
  5. Hist 6260, US and Middle East, 1783-present
  6. Hist 6050, Great Depression, New Deal, and WWII
  7. Hist 6030, Seminar in American History, 1800-1865
  8. Choose from the following World History Courses:
  9. Hist 5350, Renaissance in European History
  10. Hist 6355, History of Rome
  11. Hist 6375, 20th century European History

The History courses would have to be taken in the Fall semester.
