HERBERTSDALE PRIMARY

PROGRESS REPORT SEPTEMBER VISIT 2017

On Friday 8th of September we visited the Green Roses with the intention of handing over their leadership badges and planting trees for Arbor week.

There was a special assembly held whereby the whole school gathered with the staff. There was a brief talk about the new leadership roles. Learners in grade 4 and 5 were inspired to look up to these roles and positions and know that they too will get to be future leaders. The juniors were encouraged to be respectful and to cooperate with their leaders.

Each team came up and were handed the badges which they proudly pinned on their uniform.

There were two educators that offered their mentorship to the teams. We are very happy that the educators are keen to drive and assist the learners. We would like to thank Ms Veronika Muller and MsLizelleLabuschagne for stepping into mentorship roles for the teams.

GREEN CLUB PARTNERSHIP ENGAGEMENTS

The green club appreciates the commitment and partnership of organisations such as GCBR, GONDWANA GAME RESERVE, LANDMARK FOUNDATION and GRCCT (Garden Route Casino Community Trust). This support quantifies a long term sustainable partnership to improve the communities in our reach.

The first set of boards were erected on Friday, September 8th.These boards will indicate to a visitor to the school that this school carries an environmental ethos and has an established green club.

ACTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM PREVIOUS REPORT AUGUST 2017

  1. An inventory with all the tools/materials bought should be prepared by each team and compiled by the secretary so that there is a record of what has been bought.
  2. The Chair must run a meeting every Monday with a register. Each team representative can give feedback on the week’s activities with actions to improve.
  3. Library teacher to train up the Librarians to archive the books. As well as cleaning the Library and getting it up to a functional mode. Learners are very keen.
  4. Waste Management team to label the large blue bins for re-cycling.
  5. Other educators needed to mentor team such a Committee, Bathrooms etc.

Here is a list from our first camp that could get pinned up and dealt with at every meeting with due dates and resolutions for each item.

PROJECTS FOR 2017

The following projects were suggested for this year:

  1. School Beautification Project. To improve the appearance of the school by adding flower gardens and fruit trees. (ARBOR WEEK)
  2. Waste Management Re-cycling Project. The school already has an organic waste program. All the kitchen scraps and food waste is sent out to a parent that has pigs and other is distributed by various parents for dog food etc. A paper and plastic program will be put in place.
  3. Library upgrade. We would like to include a projector to this upgrade; however it first needs a good clean up.
  4. Bathroom improvement. Learners have requested towels, soaps, pictures and nice smelling deodorizes.
  5. Creating functional garden refuse compost.
  6. Movie evening fund raiser.
  7. Waste fund raiser.

RECOMMENDATION/TASKS TO BE COMPLETED BY MANAGERS

Each team leader/manager was asked to produce a needs list for their project. The project managers will get a kit that will enable them to run their project. For example: The Librarians will need, Mr Min, wood oil, cloths, a bucket, a feather duster etc.

We also requested that the managers draw up a list of “rules” with their teams so that they can be placed at the various doors pertaining to different projects. For Example: The Bathroom rules can be place outside on the doors so everyone knows how to use them.

An official school photo in full school uniform with names of team and members for the local newspaper and noticeboard. Media team to assist.

The Green Club should get together to discuss a name for their club. It should be voted on and only the committed learners are to vote.

One afternoon a week should be dedicated for green club activities, planting, organizing etc. Mr Stander discussed Monday being a good day for green activities.

Andre to train the committee to take full responsibility of their duties.

I recommend that the English and Afrikaans teachers train and mentor the Media team on report writing and journalism skills. How to write simple two liner captions for photographs etc.

The math teacher could mentor the treasurer in keeping simple books for the club.

The Library teacher now has assistants and could mentor them for this task

It is ideal that there be a teacher that offers to mentor a team. Mentor means guiding and assisting with administrative needs and NOT to take over the manager’s role. This can easily turn into a burden for the teacher and a high jacking of the learner’s positions.

Items marked in green have already been handled.

We feel very proud of these learners who are so willing to make changes for the betterment of their school and community. This is a process driven project and relies on the conscious awakening of the learner to take responsibility for his/her own world. One bite at a time!

We are thankful to the organisations that are making this possible. A special vote of thanks goes to Mr Stander for his commitment to giving the learners opportunity to grow and lead and for believing in the cause.
