Healthy Living 101—Spring 2011

HL101 is an eight-session series on living a healthy life. This class introduces the basic principles of lifestyle as an approach to disease prevention and management. The focus is on developing stress-coping skills, achieving a healthy diet, and incorporating a regular routine of physical activity. The HL 101 manual, lifestyle logbook, a one-hour session of medically supervised exercise, and instructional CD are provided. Participants are encouraged to purchase a good quality pedometer (available at CCHL and from other sources).

Time & Place—Thursdays, 4:30 to 6 pm at Cayuga Center for Healthy Living (CCHL) at the Island Health Center, 3rd floor. Call (607) 252-3590 to register or for more information.

At a time to be scheduled by you. Exercise as Medicine—we know that exercise is good for us, but what kind and how much? Medically Supervised Exercise (MSE) at Island Health and Fitness Center is a great way to jump-start your exercise program. Plan your one-hour session with CCHL at available times that fit your schedule: Mon/Wed/Fri 8-9, 9:30-10:30. Tues/Thurs 2-3. Extra session Wed 5-6.

Week 1,March 10. An orientation to the many ways in which diet, exercise, and stress help or hinder our health and quality of life. The logbook system of tracking and managing progress is introduced.

Week 2,March 17. Workshop on logbook use, with guidance and support during these early stages of data collection. Time for open discussion and support.

Week 3,March 24. Intro to stress management—it’s a hectic world out there! How does stress impact our daily functioning? Learn to manage the experience of stress with brief techniques to help make healthy choices for stress relief.

Week 4, March 31. Healthy eating—key concepts and practices related to healthy eating, weight management, and disease prevention.

Week 5, April 7. Workshop on healthy eating in the real world—learn how to how to implement dietary strategies in daily life. Time for open discussion, logbook review, and support.

Week 6,April 14. Healthy shopping and cooking—how-to’s of healthy shopping and basics of healthy meal planning. Class includes hands-on activities and recipes that are full of flavor but not full of fat.

Week 7,April 21. Putting it all together—includes time for open discussion, logbook review, and support.

Course content may be modified as needed.
