Health & Fitness Mrs. Cotton/Mr. Huether

Course Description

This is a year-long class in which students will rotate between health and fitness every three weeks. Students will receive a broad-based health & fitness curriculum that will teach them the skills necessary to lead a healthy life, mentally, physically and socially. They will take part in learning experiences that will aid them in making informed decisions for a healthy life and physical skills to promote lifelong fitness and improve upon their current fitness level.

Course Requirements

All students will actively & safely participate in their personal advancement of health and fitness concepts and skills. As responsible citizens of our classroom community, each student will:

▪Participate in daily assignments and activities in class.

▪Give your personal best effort each day.

▪Respect others and themselves as individuals and as learners.

▪Respect and adhere to class and school rules.

Grading

Health- 50% (daily assignments, tests and in-class activities)

Fitness- 50% 5 points possible each day.

4 for effort/safe participation

1 for dressing down (Liberty fitness shirt and shorts or long pants that are different from the clothes worn to school)

Late/Missing Work Policy

It is very important that students gain personal responsibility for their learning. Health assignments turned in late will be marked down 10% for each school day it is late up to 50%. Students are encouraged to turn work in at any time during the 6 week grading period and can receive up to half credit for doing so. Once the 6 weeks is over work from that grading period will no longer be accepted. I upload most assignments directly to skyward. When you click on the letter grade for this class you’ll see a list of assignments. Next to an assignment with an attachment will be a paperclip. You can click the paperclip to download the assignment.

Health Make Up Work Policy

The Liberty Middle School late policy allows two (2) make-up days for each day that a student has an excused absence. It is the student’s responsibility to gather work (notes, assignments and teaching materials) that is introduced while they are gone. Students can get these resources from classmates, Mrs. Cotton or the class website listed below.

Fitness Class:

Students who choose not to participate in class (or are removed from class due to behavior issues) will receive a 0 for the day and that score cannot be made up or improved upon.

Fitness Make Up Work Policy

Fitness classes in which you cannot participate (other than because of a required school event) need to be made up. Classes missed for ANY other reason (illness/injury, doctor appointment, vacation, etc.), student needs to make up or grade will be a zero for the day(s). Fitness make up sheets must be turned in within 2 weeks of the absence to receive full credit. Make up sheet, like all other work, cannot be turned in after the 6 week grading period is over. Fitness make up sheets can be found in the gym, locker rooms, on my class website, in the main office and in the health classroom. Specific accommodations will be made for those with injuries requiring them to miss class for an extended amount of time with a doctor’s note.

Locks and Lockers

Each student will receive a fitness lock and locker

oALWAYS keep your locker locked and double-check before you leave (Liberty is NOT responsible for items lost in the locker room) DO NOT share your combination (even with friends)

oOnly school issued locks are acceptable to use.

How to stay connected:

I highly value communication and family involvement as a central aspect of each student’s health and fitness education. It is of utmost importance that students and parents feel involved and informed in their learning. I invite you to be connected to your student’s education and encourage them to take responsibility for their learning in a number of ways:

□ If you would like to receive updates regarding grades please log onto your skyward account and update your e mail address and contact info so that grade reports can be e mailed to you as they are updated.

□ Log on to our class website and mark it as a favorite now!! This will have information regarding upcoming assignments, due dates and announcements.

□ Check your student’s planner regularly; class time is devoted to filling out the planner every day!
