2014 Outdoor Education Program

Week #1 October 1 – 3, 2014

Week #2 October 22 – 24, 2014

This school year, Sixth grade students will be attend Sixth Grade Camp by their assigned math teacher. Mrs. Yerse’s classes will attend Week #1 (October 1 – 3). Miss Hill’s classes will attend Week #2 (October 22 – 24). Parent meeting is Monday, September 8 in the Memorial auditorium at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Hiram House Camp is located on Hiram Trail in Moreland Hills, Ohio. It is

approximately a 30 minute bus ride from Memorial Middle School.

Cost: $90.00. Payment and all forms are due on or before Wednesday, -September 24 (Week #1), or October 15, 2014 (Week #2) Payments can be made through Mentor Schools Card Campus or by check made payable to Mentor Schools delivered to the Memorial Middle School main office. All cards and forms should be turned into your child’s Math Teacher. Week #1forms will go to Mrs. Yerse and Week #2 will go to Miss Hill.

Departure: Students are to arrive at Memorial Middle School at 7:00 a.m. the morning of Wednesday October 1 (Week #1) and Wednesday, October 22 (Week #2).Students will load their equipment directly onto the Mentor Schools' equipment truck and report to the auditorium for attendance. Trucks will be located in the back of the building (the area between Garfield and Memorial). The bus will depart at 7:30 a.m. sharp! Students will be transported to & from Hiram House Camp by a Mentor School bus. Parents may drop off camp gear at the same location anytime after 6:30 a.m. if they need to get to work. Our custodial staff will then transfer the gear to the truck once it arrives.

Return: We will return to Memorial Middle School at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3 (Week #1) or Friday, October 24 (Week #2). You will need to pick-up your child from the school or make arrangements for your child to be picked up at that time. A completed permission form stating who will be picking up your child must be given to the Math Teachers prior to camp. There will be no bus service from Memorial Middle School home. Please plan to pick up your child in the back of Memorial by 1:00 p.m.

Emergencies: In the event that your child is hurt during our stay at camp, and it is determined that your child needs more medical attention than can be provided by the camp nurse, your child will be transported by appropriate means to Hillcrest Hospital. The phone number at camp in the event of an emergency at home is (216) 831-5045. This number is for emergencies only. Please, do not call to “check” on your child.

Medication: All medication must be turned into the school nurse, Mrs. Weber (974-2264) on or before Friday,September 26 for Week #1 and all medicine for Week #2 on Thursday, October 16. All medication, (including, but not limited to cough drops or aspirin) must be in the original container and must have the appropriate forms signed by a physician. This includes all over the counter/OTC medications. No medications are to be carried by students.

Luggage: Students should pack all gear in suitcases or duffel bags that are clearly marked with the camper’s name. Students should try to limit the number of pieces of luggage they bring as they will be responsible for carrying their gear from the supply trucks to their cabins.

Cabins: Your child will stay in a cabin with other campers and an adult (parent) counselor. There will also be a Mentor High School student counselor in each cabin.

Counselors: The counselors are a combination of parent volunteers and

Mentor High School students who have been through background checks and a screening process before being selected.

Name Tags: All campers are required to wear name tags at all times.

Showers: Campers will have the opportunity to shower at least once a day or more if needed!!! While the showers have private stalls, they may bring a bathing suit to shower in if they would like.

Instructional

Units: Students will rotate through a variety of classes taught by their teachers and the Hiram House staff. A schedule of classes will be provided to students once at camp.

Misc: There is no parent visitation permitted at camp. Do not send food, candy, or gum with your child, as it may attract animals. Cell phones, or any other electronic devices, are also not permitted at camp and will be confiscated!

Discipline: Safety is our number one concern! Any student who poses a threat to his, or another camper’s safety, or has disciplinary problems may, at the discretion of the facilitator, be required to leave camp without a refund. Parents would be responsible to provide transportation home. Mentor Public Schools code of conduct is enforced at all times.

Mail: Students love to receive mail at camp. In order for them to receive it, mail it no later than Monday of the week we are there. Please do not send any “care packages” containing food or other items not permitted at camp. It is important to include your child’s school name in the return address so that it can be forwarded in the event it is not received in time. Please address your child’s mail as follows:

Any student not attending the Mentor Schools Outdoor Education Program for any reason, other than illness, will be required to be in attendance at Memorial Middle School and will be placed in an appropriate educational setting for the week.
